No Cavities? Thank Your Parents

how to prevent cavities Valrico

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we stay abreast of new discoveries in the exciting field of dentistry and occasionally share interesting facts with our patients. Today’s post focuses on new findings in a compelling field of research: genetic dentistry.

“About 60% of the risk for tooth decay appears to be due to genetic factors.” Mary L. Marazita, director of the Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.1

Whoa! Did she say 60%? That’s huge. You might be thinking: “That’s why I brush and floss but still get cavities.” Or, better yet, you might be thinking, “No wonder I have never had a cavity but eat candy often and occasionally go to bed without brushing.”

A recent article on CNN.com highlights tooth decay risk factors that have a genetic link1:

Enamel Strength
Your genes play an important role in the composition of your tooth enamel. Soft enamel is more cavity prone.

Sugar Cravings
Whether or not you love sugar has a genetic basis. Now you can blame your parents if you pop M&Ms all day. (But it still isn’t good for your teeth or waistline!)

Chemical Composition of Saliva

Your saliva can protect against cavities – if it properly metabolizes critical minerals and vitamins like calcium, potassium, iron, and Vitamin C. Your genes influence your saliva’s power to prevent decay.

Immune Response to Bacteria
We don’t like to think about the dangerous bacteria in our mouth but, hopefully, our immune system is ever-vigilant at fighting their constant attempts to cause decay and gum disease. The durability of your immune system is determined, in part, by genetics.

In the next few decades, scientists in the emerging specialty of genetic dentistry may play a vital role in the development of new cavity prevention techniques.

The purpose of this article is not to encourage Five Star Dental Care patients to be lax about oral hygiene if their parents have strong teeth. Nor to cause those whose teeth decay easily to throw their hands up in despair and resign themselves to a toothless mouth.

Proper oral hygiene is vital for all of us, regardless of our genetic predisposition to tooth decay. You have the capacity to be energetic about your oral health, regardless of the genes you inherited. Whether you have frequent dental check-ups, consistent fluoride intake, effective brushing and flossing techniques, and proper nutrition, is up to you.

If you need a thorough dental exam, an expert dental cleaning, a refresher course on proper brushing and flossing, or want to improve your smile with innovative cosmetic dentistry, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-413-7518 to schedule a consultation.

Fluoride Treatments: Not Just For Kids

fluoride treatment Valrico

You rarely hear the word “toothpaste” without it being preceded by “fluoride.” “Fluoride toothpaste” is ubiquitous for good reason.

Fluoride is an essential mineral that helps your teeth stay strong. It is found in some foods and water and makes toothpastes more effective at fighting cavities. Fluoride helps teeth by making them stronger and more resistant to the dangerous acid that is formed by bacteria. Dr. Jeff Bynum may recommend a fluoride treatment in addition to your dental cleaning.

The fluoride used in in-office treatments comes in either a gel or foam, and may be available in several flavors. The fluoride is applied directly to teeth through the use of a plastic dental tray that fits over your teeth. The tray is kept in your mouth for just a few minutes. Fluoride treatments are a straightforward and painless way to strengthen your teeth and maintain an attractive smile.

While many Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS patients understand the importance of fluoride treatments in fortifying developing teeth in children, some do not realize the importance of fluoride for adults. For this reason, fluoride treatments are sometimes recommended to adults who are susceptible to enamel wear or dental caries.

If you wonder if you or your child is getting enough fluoride, meet with Dr. Bynum about fluoride supplements. Dr. Bynum will let you know if they are needed and determine the precise supplement dosage. Don’t give your child fluoride supplements without your dentist’s counsel. Too much fluoride can lead to fluorosis which discolors teeth and, ironically, can make teeth more susceptible to tooth decay.

A factor that impacts the amount of fluoride your youth are receiving is where you get your drinking water. Your children may not need fluoride supplements if they drink tap water from a fluoridated Florida municipal water supply. If your family only drinks bottled water without fluoride, you may want to think about supplementation. Keep in mind that the FDA does not require bottled water companies to list the fluoride content on the bottle label and many brands sold in the Tampa area do not contain fluoride.

If your child is getting adequate levels of fluoride but continues to get cavities, communicate with Dr. Bynum about useful dental sealants. They have proven to be very effective at protecting the rear molars from dental caries.

Dr. Bynum is devoted to preventative dentistry with critical twice-yearly exams and dental cleanings that may include a fluoride treatment. Call 813-413-7518 to book an exam and cleaning and be on your way to a healthy, attractive smile!

Is Perfect Possible?

Riverview FL Cosmetic Dentistry Are you evaluating a smile makeover? Are you skeptical of promises of a “perfect smile” or a “celebrity smile?” Let’s review the most popular cosmetic dental procedures and the results that can be expected.

Composite Veneers
The application of porcelain veneers at Five Star Dental Care can remedy several aesthetic dental issues and is usually a better answer than dental bonding.

Veneers can correct chips, cracks, minor tooth misalignment, tooth discoloration, unattractive tooth shape, and disproportionate tooth size. Can a porcelain veneer create a perfect tooth? While a veneer cannot repair a decayed tooth, it can turn an unappealing tooth into an aesthetically perfect tooth.

Tooth Bleaching
Tooth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic dental treatment that dramatically improves a smile. However, some tooth whitening dentists will guarantee fantastic results for any patient that wants a whiter smile.

At Five Star Dental Care in Valrico, we only recommend tooth bleaching for patients that are good candidates for the process. If you have several crowns in the front of your mouth, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not lighten your smile.

Call 813-413-7518 to schedule a tooth-whitening consultation.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Would you like to turn back the clock to your pre-filling smile? It is possible with white fillings at Five Star Dental Care. To get an idea of how the inside of your mouth would look without unappealing metal amalgam fillings, have someone without any fillings open their mouth. Do you remember when your mouth looked like that?

These are just a few of the cosmetic dental answers that create dazzling smiles for our patients. Call us today!

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Tampa

Here at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS we approach all your dental needs from two separate angles – what we can do in our Valrico office and what you can do at home. For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more affordable.

Additionally, we advise you regarding food and drink choices that can affect your whitened smile. Be aware of staining culprits such as coffee, tea, tobacco and harsh sodas. We understand that avoiding these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with such substances. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can lead to stronger staining and discoloration.

If you are interested in making improvements to your smile and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and contact the incredible staff at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS today 813-413-7518. Dr. Jeff Bynum, DDS, takes pride in providing knowledgeable care and expertise when treating patients.

Come discover the personal attention with dental crowns, the patient and steady hand with teeth whitening, the wise and thorough instruction relating to Invisalign. Once you’ve scheduled a consultation, make the easy drive to 3203 Lithia Pinecrest Rd Valrico, Florida 33596 and settle in for guidance that will make your daily oral care and lifestyle choices productive and meaningful.

When it comes to hygiene and healthy teeth we are a practice that wants to see you as little as possible. (It’s not that we don’t love you – we just want you to have a healthy smile!) If we only see you twice a year for regular checkups then we’ve done our job. Check out our website at http://www.fivestardentalcare.com/ or come in for an evaluation and recommendations.

Dr. Bynum provides the full spectrum of dental services from cosmetic dentistry to restorative dentistry to dental implants. And we welcome patients from all over the area, from Tampa to Plant City and from Brandon FL to Riverview FL.

Making The Cost Of Dental Treatment Palatable At Five Star Dental Care

cost of dental work Tampa

A healthy smile is priceless and superior dental care is a worthwhile investment in your quality of life. But the cost for treatment and precision restorations can sometimes be prohibitive. Knowing what to expect price-wise can make your dental visit more palatable.

Obviously, the cost of some procedures such as crowns versus fillings are dependent upon unknown factors. X-rays can show the basic problem but sometimes the extent of the damage isn’t clear until we get in there. Our caring staff works to offer estimates based on best-case and worst-case scenarios.

Nailing down the cost is much easier once the overall treatment plan is established. Dr. Jeff Bynum performs an oral exam, reviews the patient’s dental history, and consults with the patient before creating an estimate. The price is influenced by the patient’s current condition, cosmetic goals, and long-term functionality.

Usually, the cost of treatments such as teeth whitening, dental implants, veneers, denture fittings, and the price of cosmetic dentistry can be explained at the initial consultation with Dr. Bynum. We encourage our patients to take some time to review the options before they choose  which elective procedures to pursue. We never pressure our patients to make a quick decision about something as important as dental treatment.

Here at Five Star Dental Care, we are devoted to customized patient-focused care. Often the treatment plan will be extended over several visits to allow healing and adjustment in the mouth before doing more work.

With restorations, the most conservative treatment is always preferred. The cost is weighed with priority for adequate eating and speaking functionality. Personal confidence in appearance is also taken into account and given priority.

Dr. Bynum has been practicing dentistry since 1996. If you are in the market for teeth whitening or porcelain veneers but are worried about how much it will set you back or whether your insurance company covers the procedure, then call 813-413-7518 today and let us look into it for you.

Feel free to shop around and compare our economical prices to other dentists in the area – but be wary of bargain-basement dental advertisements. Many ads present a false picture of the actual cost of the treatment. And, do you really want to trust your smile to the lowest bidder?

Thank you for visiting our blog.

Express Your Personality With A Smile Makeover

Valrico dentistry

What makes up a perfect smile? White teeth? Straight teeth? Teeth with pleasing proportions relative to one another? A stunning smile is more than the sum of its parts. At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we believe that your perfect smile also contains another element – your unique personality.

What is a smile makeover? It is a combination of procedures that remedy any problems with your existing smile. First off, we look at the health of your teeth. If you have cavities, we take care of those first. Oral health is paramount.

Then, Dr. Jeff Bynum becomes a cosmetic dental artist using all the innovative treatments available. Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a multitude of tooth restoration treatments. On the least invasive end we have dental bonding and inlays/onlays. These can often be completed in just one visit. Porcelain veneers can remedy small imperfections such as chips. A veneer can also correct the shape of a tooth that is misaligned.

If you have teeth that are not structurally sound, you may need a dental crown. The crowns we provide at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in Valrico blend perfectly with your existing teeth. No “chiclet” effect where the crown sticks out like a sore thumb.

What if you have a tooth that is completely missing? Ask us about dental implants. This permanent tooth restoration is actually anchored into the jawbone, offering strength, natural function, and protection from bone recession. With a tooth implant, there is no need to damage the two adjacent teeth as is necessary for a dental bridge. There are a variety of dental braces available for our Valrico patients who need orthodontic treatment. Ask us about invisible braces, lingual braces and fast braces.

Perhaps your greatest need is to repair prior dental work performed elsewhere. We can remove old silver fillings and replace with natural tooth colored fillings and replace broken dental crowns.

The crowning touch? Tooth whitening.

Bad Breath Treatment at Five Star Dental Care

Bad Breath Treatment at Five Star Dental Care Do you suspect that you have bad breath? I’m Jeff Bynum of Five Star Dental Care, a full-service dental office in Valrico, Florida. I help our dental patients diagnose and overcome this unpleasant and potentially embarrassing condition.

Halitosis is caused by the bacteria that live on and around your teeth, gums and tongue. Breath mints and mouthwashes do not cure bad breath, they only mask the symptoms. Proper oral hygiene can cure many cases of bad breath. However, in some cases, bad breath is caused by more serious conditions. Sinus and tonsil infections, acid reflux, ulcers, diabetes, hypoglycemia, kidney malfunction, and eating disorders are just some of the health issues that can cause bad breath.

If you have bad breath, the first thing to do is make sure you are cleaning your teeth, gums and tongue thoroughly. This does not mean you should brush as long and forcefully as possible. Brushing too vigorously can harm gums and contribute to gum recession. At Five Star Dental Care, we help patients of all ages learn safe and effective brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning methods.

And don’t forget regular professional cleanings. Our friendly dental hygienist is trained in the latest and most effective deep-cleaning procedures. Your teeth feel so good after being cleaned professionally!

To make an appointment for an exam, cleaning or consultation, call 813-653-2273. Your teeth are too important to neglect.

If My Gums Bleed, Should I Stop Flossing?

bleeding gums Valrico

This is a critical question occasionally asked by patients at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS. The answer, however, is “No!” Bleeding is probably a sign that you need to clean your teeth and gums more thoroughly – not leave them alone. It is impossible to clean effectively between teeth without using floss or an interdental brush.

If you have never flossed before, your gums might bleed the first few times you use floss. The bleeding may be due to dangerous gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding often stops within a week or two.

Gingivitis (gum disease) and the more advanced periodontal disease is extremely common in Florida and around the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that half of American adults aged 30 and over have periodontal disease. https://www.perio.org/consumer/cdc-study.htm

If you don’t make flossing a habit, and your gums become sore, swollen, and tender, it could result in gum disease. The good news is that, unlike tooth decay, gum disease can be reversed with improved oral hygiene.

It is vital to correctly use dental floss to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth:

  1. Cut a length of floss about 18 inches long.
  2. Securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
  3. Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with.
  4. Thread the floss between two teeth.
  5. Hold the floss tightly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s critical to scrape up and out of the pocket.
  6. Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface – especially those that your brush can’t reach. As you use a section of floss, unwind from one hand to access a clean piece. With 18 inches, you should have enough to provide a clean section for every tooth. If you run out, that’s okay. Just toss the used piece and cut a new one.

Some people find it easier to start on one end on the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side. Then repeat for the bottom row. Whatever operation you choose, make sure you clean around every tooth, including the back surfaces of the last molars.

What if you continue flossing for a few weeks and still observe bleeding? Call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-413-7518 to schedule a consultation. Jeff Bynum, DDS, will carry out an intensive examination to determine the cause of the bleeding.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, our goal is to help patients keep healthy teeth and gums. Our dental hygienists not only complete the most thorough dental cleanings, they also educate patients on proper brushing and flossing. If you have a child who needs extra help learning how to brush and floss correctly, schedule an appointment with our child-friendly team.

Some patients have perfectly healthy teeth and gums but are not content with their smile due to cosmetic troubles. If you want to explore possibilities for improving your smile, communicate with us today at 813-413-7518.

We offer cutting-edge cosmetic dental care including teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, inlays/onlays, and tooth-colored filling replacement. Which Tooth Whitener Works Best?

Dazzling White Teeth in Valrico What is the best professional tooth whitening system to use in Valrico?

There are two types of dentist-supervised tooth whitening systems available in Tampa. In order to determine the best choice for your teeth, schedule, and budget; you need to understand the differences in the systems.

Both systems use a bleaching agent containing peroxide. Valrico dentists who offer professional in-office tooth bleaching use a whitening gel with a high concentration of peroxide. Some in-office tooth whitening systems use a light that causes the tooth bleaching agent to work faster.

There are different types of lights including halogen, plasma arc, metal halide and laser; but they all work the same way. When the light is shined at teeth on which the whitening gel is applied, it causes the peroxide to break down into free radicals, which are active oxygen molecules. This process naturally occurs without the light, but the light makes it happen faster. That is why you can get whiter teeth in just one hour.

Most Valrico cosmetic dentists also offer take home tooth whitening systems. Although these procedures take a bit longer to work, they achieve the same dramatic results. For many Plant City and Brandon FL patients, this is the most affordable teeth whitening system.

At Five Star Dental Care, we offer safe and effective teeth bleaching. Our Valrico cosmetic dentistry patients can’t believe how great their teeth look when they remove the stains and restore the brightness. If you would like to learn why our system is superior, schedule a consultation by calling our office at 813-413-7518.

Gritting Your Teeth: Stress And Your Smile

Valrico how stress hurts your teeth

Doctors have been telling us for years that stress can increase the risk of everything from high blood pressure to depression. But how often do we think about how stress affects our smile? Here are some dental problems linked to stress.

Canker and Cold Sores
Cold sores are a symptom of the herpes simplex virus. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes canker sores but suspect they are related to infection, virus, or a weak immune system. If you are prone to mouth sores, you probably already know that stress seems to bring them on or increase healing times. If you frequently get these sores, communicate with your doctor or dentist. Your healthcare provider can advise you on medications, diet, and stress reduction techniques.

Teeth Grinding

It’s no surprise that teeth grinding (bruxism) is bad for teeth. It starts with enamel wear, then loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. During this progression, there may be other issues such as gum recession, headaches, and TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders). If you grind your teeth, it’s vital to address this condition as soon as possible. In addition to stress, there are many factors that can cause or exacerbate bruxism. These include: malocclusion (bad bite), sleep apnea, and prescription depression and anxiety medications.

Your dentist may prescribe an appliance to protect your teeth and keep your jaw in the proper position while you are sleeping. Other treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation therapies, mandibular advancement devices, physical therapy, and medication. Your dentist can create a treatment plan and work with you and your doctor to manage or eliminate this condition.

Temporomandibular Disorders
There are many direct and indirect causes of TMD. For example, inability to manage stress may cause jaw clenching which, in turn, causes pain in the jaw joint. Other symptoms of TMD include tenderness, pain, or swelling in the neck, ear, face, or shoulder; popping or clicking sounds; and changes in bite alignment. Again, if you experience any of these, communicate with your dentist.

Gum Disease
Stress can reduce your ability to fight plaque build-up which can cause gum disease.

Oral Hygiene
Some people overlook brushing and flossing when life becomes problematic.

Diet
It’s not uncommon for people to consume more sugar, snack more often between meals, or drink more alcoholic beverages when experiencing increased stress. All this at a time when vigilant oral hygiene is frequently not a person’s first priority!

Tooth pain and untreated dental issues will only give you something else to worry about. Let’s nip this vicious cycle in the bud.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum. If you haven’t seen a dentist in a while and are experiencing an unusually stressful period, I invite you to schedule an appointment with me by calling Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-413-7518. Let’s determine the status of your oral health, schedule treatment if needed, and create a plan to restore and maintain a healthy smile. Remember, a healthy smile will give you one less thing to worry about.
