4 Reasons To Make Sure Your Child Sees A Dentist

Riverview FL family dentist

Did you know that The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to a dentist should occur around twelve months of age?

Today in the Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS post, we are going to review 4 reasons why your toddler’s teeth are worth a dental visit.

1. Twelve months of age happens to be about the time when a child’s first teeth tend to erupt. Once those teeth are out, it’s time to get them looked at by a professional.

2. One of the most important things your dentist will do at this visit will be to clean those young teeth and apply fluoride.

3. Visiting the dentist at a young age is a great way to help your child get used to the dentist’s office. This will help them to be more comfortable with the dentist as they grow older.

4. Visiting the dentist also helps parents enlist the help of other adults is establishing good dental habits in their children. Starting early dental visits will mean that later in life your child is less likely to require braces or other cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental implants.

If your child is apprehensive about visiting the dentist, you might want to bring them for a short tour of our office beforehand. They can meet our friendly staff and learn what to expect when they come in for their exam.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover or other cosmetic dentistry procedures, contact my knowledgeable dental team at 813-413-7518.

How Does Your Overall Health Affect Your Smile?

Educating Valrico Dental Patients About Little-Known Risks Hi! I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum, DDS. Most every day, I can be found at my dental practice treating patients with tooth and gum problems, or helping patients prevent them. There are many common medical conditions that pose a risk to oral health.

1) Diabetes patients with high blood glucose often have a higher risk of dental issues. If you have diabetes, let’s talk. My number is 813-413-7518.

2) A persistent dry mouth due to an inadequate amount of saliva can accelerate tooth decay, cause or contribute to gum disease, and trigger chronic bad breath. Many medications, including those for high-blood pressure and depression, cause dry mouth. This side effect is not only unpleasant, it is dangerous. Anti-depressants (especially SSRI’s) and anti-psychotic drugs can also trigger tooth-grinding (bruxism).

3) Acid reflux in children and adults is associated with a host of dental problems such as decay and periodontal disease.

I help many dental patients prevent problems associated with medical conditions that sometimes seem unrelated to dental health. Regular professional dental care is essential for oral health, and an important part of your overall physical health.

Lasering In On Precision Dentistry

top dentist Valrico

The powerful, precise, highly-concentrated beam of light originally known as Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is so ubiquitous that the acronym has now been relegated to lower case.

Lasers are used in everything from weapons to barcode scanners. They have increased efficiency and advanced technology in numerous industries such as communications, manufacturing, and essentially every branch of science. Today’s post focuses on how lasers have impacted dentistry.

Lasers are now used in many state-of-the-art dental practices for a broad range of care. Lasers allow dentists to be extremely precise when working on both tooth and gum tissue.

Dentists use lasers to:

  • Remove decay while preserving more intact tooth material
  • Firmly attach bonding material to a tooth
  • Remove oral lesions or obtain tissue for biopsies
  • Reshape receded gums
  • Eliminate bacteria while performing root canals
  • Increase the effectiveness of tooth whitening agents

Dental patients benefit with:

  • Fewer stitches – some surgical procedures require no sutures when a laser is used
  • Faster healing
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Decreased damage to surrounding tissue/bone
  • Less pain – eliminates the need for anesthesia in many procedures

Dr. Bynum uses advanced dental technology to serve our valued patients. At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we believe that every man, woman, and child deserves a beautiful smile and a lifetime of oral health.

Replace A Missing Tooth With A Durable Dental Implant

Valrico dental implants

Implants? Crowns? Veneers? Invisible braces?  Dentistry has advanced to provide many new solutions that address almost every possible dental issue.

In the past, if a patient had a missing tooth or a severely damaged tooth, dentists regularly suggested dental bridges or dentures, because they were the best options at the time. These days, revolutionary dental implants have proven to be superior to dental bridges for most. They can also replace dentures or anchor dentures for some patients.

A tooth implant provides many vital advantages over a dental bridge or dentures:

Longevity – Dental implants are heavy-duty and permanent, meaning with proper care they can last ten years or more.
Seamless – Fabricated to have the same shape, size and color of the original tooth, the implant will blend seamlessly with all the other teeth. If the original tooth had aesthetic problems, these can generally be fixed with the implant crown.
Function – A dental implant functions like a natural tooth allowing for normal eating and speaking.
Convenience – Unlike dentures, no adhesives, rinsing, or removal is required.
Independent – Like the missing tooth, the dental implant is treated individually. No damaging of adjacent teeth is required, as with dental bridges. This independence allows nearby teeth to remain intact. Cleaning is easier than with most dental bridges which can require the threading of floss under and around the artificial tooth.

Step 1: Consultation
If you are interested in getting a tooth implant, call Five Star Dental Care at 813-413-7518 to schedule a tooth implant consultation. Dr. Bynum will chat with you about your dental history, take x-rays, and perform an exam. If it is determined you’re a good candidate, we’ll schedule the first procedure during a time that suits you best.

Step 2: Procedure

Plaster dental impressions of both upper and lower plates will be taken. Dr. Bynum will place the titanium implant, which looks like a dark screw, into the bone of your jaw. Over the next couple of months, the bone and implant will bond together to form a root for your new tooth.

After the required time has passed for bonding of the bone and implant, an extension (called an abutment) is placed on top of the initial implant post. This post extension is then capped with a temporary tooth. Meanwhile, the team of professionals at our lab will shape your new, permanent crown.

Dr. Bynum will then put the permanent crown on top of the full post. This tooth will match your other teeth to create an extraordinary new smile. You will find that the comfort is the same as your natural teeth, to the point that you may even forget which tooth is the implant. The upkeep is the same, with brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups required.

To learn more about dental implants and smile redesign options, call for more details or to schedule an appointment. We look forward to meeting you!

What’s New In Dentistry?

Advanced Dentistry in Valrico The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited your Valrico dentist lately, you have probably noticed some things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment. Many Tampa dentistry patients welcome oral conscious sedation to reduce or eliminate pain.

What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top Valrico dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.

The use of lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. Tampa family dentists use lasers for detecting and treating cavities and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.

Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows Plant City cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

If you need a thorough exam, expert dental cleaning, or want to improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-413-7518 to schedule a consultation. During your consultation, you can see before and after photos of some of our smile makeover patients. We would love to help you achieve the smile you deserve, and we have the tools, experience and technology to make that happen- Jeff Bynum, DDS

Overcoming Anxiety With Gentle Dental At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS

Valrico sleep dentistry

Dental anxiety and the more severe dental phobia affect many Valrico people, including some Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS patients. Today’s post answers some questions asked about this essential topic.

What are the long-term consequences of dental anxiety and dental phobia?
The most harmful consequence is when a dental phobic patient delays dental care until a pain becomes excruciating. At this point, the problem is usually extremely advanced and requires extensive treatment.

Furthermore, there are usually many other dental problems in varying stages of progression. Many oral conditions eventually cause malfunction in other vital systems risking general health and well-being.

There is also another anxiety at play, albeit a very ironic one. In addition to the emotional distress about dental treatment, the patient who avoids dental care starts panicking about the sorry condition of their teeth.

If I have dental phobia or anxiety, what should I do to preserve my oral health?

Schedule an appointment with me, Dr. Jeff Bynum of Five Star Dental Care in Valrico. There are several individual fears associated with dental anxiety and dental phobia. Fear of pain, fear of the unknown, fear of loss of control, and extreme embarrassment because of poor dental health are the most frequent concerns. During your consultation, we will address each of your individual fears and discuss them.

I have helped many patients manage their anxiety during dental exams and treatment. First off, we take things slowly. I explain exactly what is going to happen before each procedure. If the patient is embarrassed about their lack of daily oral hygiene or dental cleanings in the past, I assure the patient that I have treated many people who have neglected their teeth and nothing going on in their mouth will shock me. I never, ever give stern lectures on proper oral care – though I do give friendly instruction if requested.

If local anesthetic is required, I employ my finely-honed practices which cause zero to minimal discomfort. We agree upon a nonverbal signal, such as raising a hand, to cue me to remove my instrument from the patient’s mouth. Then he/she can take a break, breathe deeply, regain composure, ask questions, and learn the status of the procedure.

These practices go a long way to assuage anxious dental patients. At the very least, they help the patient get through the treatment that is required promptly. With each subsequent visit, the patient is comforted by increased familiarity, greater confidence, and a strengthened relationship with me and my knowledgeable team.

What if I need more help to get through treatment?
In the Valrico dental community, the terms “sleep dentistry” and “oral conscious sedation” are both used, however, they are not exactly the same thing. There are three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Level 1: Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, or, informally, “laughing gas” is safe and effective. Nitrous oxide has been used in Valrico cosmetic dental offices for decades because in many ways it is the prime mild sedative. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the treatment without rendering them completely unconscious, and wears off quickly after the mask is removed. And no needles are required – a vital feature for the needle-phobic.

Level 2: Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as speedily as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of relaxation. These medications, however, do not usually bring about complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in “conscious” sedation. Two common sedatives used by Valrico dentists to alleviate patient’s fears are diazepam and triazolam.

Level 3: IV Sedation
IV sedation produces actual “sleep dentistry.” Most patients are completely oblivious to the dental procedures they are receiving. IV sedation is beneficial for root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, multi-procedure smile makeovers, and oral surgery.

What Can Veneers Do For Tampa Smiles?

porcelain veneers cost Tampa

Hello, and welcome to our Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS cosmetic dentistry blog. Today we are taking the time to answer a common question that many dental patients have. The question is, “What exactly are veneers and how are they used in cosmetic dentistry?”

Veneers are thin shells made from durable, translucent porcelain or composite resin. They are custom-made for each patient and are used to improve the appearance of teeth. Unlike a dental crown which covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, a veneer covers just the front part of the tooth. They are commonly used to correct teeth that have been chipped, stained, decayed, or that are slightly crooked.

If you visit your dentist for veneers, he or she will first make a model of your teeth. Next, a dental technician will use the model to create the veneers, so you can be sure of a custom fit.

Since a small portion of the enamel on the tooth has to be removed so the veneer can be placed, this process is usually irreversible.

I hope that this blog entry has helped you to understand a little more about veneers and how they can help you to improve your smile. Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS offers all the services you need to create your very best smile. Ask us about gum contouring, cosmetic dental smile makeovers, teeth whitening, dental implants, and invisible braces.
