Filling The Gap: Dental Implants in Valrico

Dental implants have evolved from the realm of cutting-edge dentistry, to mainstream dentistry. They are permanent replacement teeth for people who have lost a natural tooth, and they are available from Five Star Dental Care in Valrico.

Implants are considered one of the most significant advances in dentistry over the last several decades. One of the things that people find most attractive about them is that because they are physically attached to the jaw, they are virtually indistinguishable from a real tooth, in both appearance and function.

There’s always a catch, though. To be a viable candidate for a dental implant, the patient must have enough health jaw bone to support the implant. Even then, it is possible to rebuild the bone with grafting.

One of the great benefits of dental implants is that they can strengthen existing bone. Without the natural root or an implant, the jawbone is weakened and can become fragile. An implant can prevent that from happening.

Five Star Dental in Valrico provides dental implants and other services, such as cosmetic dentistry and Invisalign clear braces. Call today to schedule a consultation or an appointment.

Clear Braces in Brandon FL

damon braces and invisalign Valrico

You can have your teeth straightened at almost any age. But no matter how old you are, you probably don’t want a mouth full of metal. Straight teeth, no metal. With clear braces in Brandon FL, you can have it both ways.

The name Invisalign is an apt description of what these clear braces do: align teeth, almost invisibly. With Invisalign, patients receive custom plastic aligners that fit snugly over the teeth, similar to an athlete’s mouthguard. Every couple of weeks, as the teeth move, the patient changes the aligners.

Patients appreciate the fact that Invisalign trays are barely noticeable. Even standing a few feet away, others may not know you’re wearing them. And because you can take them out at mealtimes, they don’t restrict a normal diet. You can take them out at bedtime, too.

At Five Star Dental Care in Brandon FL, we are enthusiastic about providing Invisalign clear braces. Other services include restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Whether you need an exam and cleaning or a complete smile makeover, we look forward to serving you.

The Whitest Teeth: Beautiful Smiles in Valrico

teeth whitening Valrico

Some people’s teeth are naturally whiter than others’, but it’s safe to say that most Valrico residents want teeth that are pearly white! If you are one of them, Five Star Dental Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry can help you get the beautiful smile you deserve.

We’d like to share some tips on teeth whitening, and what we can do for you.

Whitening Tips

Don’t Forget to Brush
The first tip seems like a no-brainer, but many people still need a reminder. We are talking about daily tooth brushing. Brushing your teeth with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is one of the best ways to keep your teeth clean and prevent cavities.

Often our teeth become discolored or stained because of what we eat and drink. When we brush, it minimizes the damage.

Fluoride Rinse
After brushing teeth, another tip is using a fluoride rinse to finish the cleaning job. Fluoride helps get into the cracks where bacteria can be hiding away. When the bacteria is killed, it prevents it from spreading and discoloring your teeth. When you are shopping for a fluoride rinse, check the labels. Some ordinary mouthwashes don’t contain fluoride.

Ask A Pro
Sometimes the discoloration takes more than an over-the-counter remedy. That’s why Five Star Dental offers other effective services to beautify your smile. We provide several teeth whitening options: our in-office treatment, and take-home teeth bleaching kits. Each provides an effective method for teeth whitening. The knowledgeable staff at Five Star Dental Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry will work with you to find the best way to improve your smile. Other specialties include cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, and toothache relief.

what are dental implants

Where can you get a beautiful smile in Brandon, FL? If you have dull or cooked teeth, or are missing a tooth, it can really detract from your appearance. But a dazzling smile can bring you increased satisfaction and confidence.

What are dental veneers? Veneers are paper-thin shells of durable material (ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin) bonded to the teeth to provide strength and add beauty to any smile. There are two types: porcelain and prepless.

What is whitening? Teeth can become faded and dull for a variety of reasons. Bleaching technology can restore the luster and give a brilliant smile.

What are dental implants? A wonderful long-term solution for missing teeth, dental implants are artificial roots surgically implanted in the jaw to anchor a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, or denture.

Behind The Scenes: Dental Crown Fabrication

how a dental crown is made Valrico

Today’s post looks at the complex process required to manufacture a dental crown. Dental crowns can be constructed with metal, ceramic (porcelain), plastics, or varying combinations of these. We will describe the process used to create a porcelain crown, though the steps are similar to those used for other materials.

Modern porcelain crowns are a technological and artistic marvel that make successful reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry possible. This picture shows three crowns attached to two implant posts. While the most advanced Florida dental lab techs and experienced ceramists can’t make a tooth as strong as Mother Nature can, they are getting pretty darn close.

As far as beauty goes, today’s high-quality crowns are just as pleasing and natural looking as real life teeth. (A crown that looks like a white Chiclet and sticks out like a sore thumb is not a high-quality crown from Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS.)

When one of our Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS patients needs a crown, a dental assistant makes an impression of all the teeth. The impression is sent to a laboratory where the plaster teeth are separated. The individual tooth mold in need of restoration is scanned into a computer to have the exact dimensions to send to the factory.

The state-of-the-art factory has a computerized machine that will then pour plaster into cylindrical molds, creating blanks. Once hardened, the process of making the tooth from the plaster blanks begins.

The machine then takes the scanned data from the impression and begins carving out the contours found in the scan. The finished tooth is not to scale, being 20% to 30% larger than needed. This enlargement is to allow for material shrinkage that will later occur.

The machine then dips the plastered tooth into liquid ceramic. The ceramic hardens and gives the tooth a gleaming, natural finish that is indistinguishable from a genuine tooth. The machine then starts a new process of orienting the tooth with others. This time, ceramic powder is poured into new molds over the plaster tooth. The molds are put on a rod and then plunged into a water-filled chamber. Once the chamber lid is closed, water pressure increases, solidifying each ceramic tooth.

The restoration is then chiseled to perfectly match the plastered tooth that is inside. This tooth becomes the ceramic shell of the crown and is easily lifted off the plastered tooth.

This shell, or coping, will then be exposed to a high temperature for increased stability. It also shrinks to the proper size when exposed to the high temperature. Once finished, a plastic replica of the original tooth is created from the computer scan. The new shell is then tested for precise fitting over the tooth.

The shell then leaves the factory for the lab, where layers of colored porcelain are painted on it. A skilled ceramist – an artist in every sense of the word – may apply up to 15 layers of porcelain to perfectly match the variations in the surrounding teeth. This labor-intensive process accounts for much of the cost of a high-quality crown.

The crown is then fired to making the porcelain more condensed throughout. More hand contouring follows, as required, and then is finished with a clear, ceramic gloss.

All of this work results in a fantastic crown for one of our patients!

If you have a broken tooth or old, unattractive crown, or want specifics about smile makeovers to get a beautiful smile for yourself, call 813-413-7518 to discuss the possibilities.

Sparkling Smiles With Safe Bleaching

affordable teeth bleaching Valrico

One of the easiest ways to upgrade your smile cosmetically in Tampa is through teeth whitening. Whitening teeth is a quick, non-invasive method to improve your overall appearance and bring confidence to your daily interactions with people.

Before beginning the procedure of teeth whitening, Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS recommends each patient meet with their cosmetic dentist for a consultation. A dental consultation will help you determine which whitening method is best for you. We can also discuss foods and habits, such as smoking, that you can avoid to keep your teeth whiter longer.”

While visiting with your dentist, you can also discuss other aspects of your smile you would like to improve. New, revolutionary technology provides methods to correct any dental problem you may have.

During your consultation, decide just how white you want your teeth to be. Depending on the whitening protocol chosen, your teeth can be enhanced three to eight shades in just an hour. An in-office procedure produces a degree of lightening that cannot be achieved with a grocery store product. During your treatment, your dentist may apply a coating to protect your gums and roots while the bleaching agent is applied. A laser is then used to make the bleach work faster.

An alternative method is to have your dentist prescribe a take-home kit. These kits are customized for each patient. First a mold is made of your teeth. Using the mold, the lab team creates trays to hold the bleach. While this method may take longer, it is more economical and more convenient for many Valrico patients. Teeth whitening results from either method can last from six months to two years.

It is critical to know that whitening does not affect existing fillings, veneers, or dental crowns. It also is temporary and may require follow-up visits to keep them white.

Treat Your Smile To A Healthy Diet

experienced family dentist Valrico

Proper nutrition can benefit you in a number of ways; increased energy, improved immunity, glowing skin, mental clarity, and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. How often, however, do you examine how your diet affects your oral health?

Your Tampa area diet can influence your risk of cavities, enamel health, and gum condition. Healthy foods provide an environment that can prevent inflammation and infection. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts are the prime choices for oral health. Calcium-fortified beverages, milk and other dairy products provide vitamins, minerals, and calcium that assists in keeping teeth, bones, and gums healthy. Eating crispy fruits and vegetables, such as apples and celery, will help clean your teeth and gums.

A healthy diet contains all the critical vitamins and minerals, and the most important mineral for teeth is fluoride – especially for kids. Between the ages of 6 months and 16 years old, both the primary and the permanent teeth come in, therefore adequate fluoride is critical.

Don’t forget, however, that too much fluoride is detrimental. Dr. Jeff Bynum can guide you on the specific dosage of fluoride for your child, taking into account whether your municipal water is fluoridated.

Even though adults’ teeth have already formed, fluoride aids in remineralizing weakened enamel to a degree. This effective mineral is applied to teeth during comprehensive dental cleanings at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS and daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Bacteria that causes enamel-destroying plaque love a steady diet of sugar – from soda, candy, and even fruit juices. When enamel wears away, the teeth become vulnerable to decay, cracks, and discoloration.

Sugary foods that are especially detrimental are those that get trapped in the spaces between teeth and the small pits and cracks in the molars. Candies that are chewy or hard can lodge in these spaces and allow for the adverse sugar to have direct contact with enamel until brushing occurs. Sticky candy can also damage braces and retainers. More than one retainer has fallen prey to sticky caramel or hard taffy.

Be sure to brush after each meal and before bed. Furthermore, remember to floss or use a water irrigating method to dislodge food particles trapped in spaces. By eating well, brushing properly, flossing regularly, and avoiding foods that stick to your teeth, you can have a beautiful smile for life. (And, hopefully, the physical energy to complement that pleasing smile and the energy to enjoy both.)

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum, and I have a full-service cosmetic dentistry practice in Valrico. Helping my dental patients stay healthy is important to me, and so is helping them achieve the smile they want through innovation cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental veneers, teeth whitening and smile redesigns.

Is The Humble Toothbrush Obsolete?

electric vs manual toothbrushes Riverview FL

Many of our tools for everyday living in Tampa have become antiquated. Online search has replaced the paper phone book. Telephone answering machines have gone the way of manual typewriters. Even the iPod, which was extolled as the culmination of technology just a few years ago, is now gathering dust as individuals play music on their smart phones.

What about the humble toothbrush? Has something flashier and more advanced replaced it? Absolutely not!

“Wait a minute,” you might say, “isn’t an electric toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush? Actually, all toothbrushes, when used properly, are effective at removing food debris and plaque to keep your beautiful smile free of cavities.

When choosing which type of toothbrush to use, consider cost and convenience. Some individuals argue that even though electric toothbrushes are more costly, you’ll save on dental bills. However, there are no valid studies to back up this claim.

Manual toothbrushes are easy to find, whereas not all drugstores sell all brands of electric toothbrushes. It is frustrating to spend over a hundred dollars for a top-of-the-line electric toothbrush and then not be able to find a replacement head when needed. People who travel may find that a smaller, manual toothbrush is easier to pack.

Whichever type of toothbrush you choose, you need to be careful about the pressure you put on your gums. Some individuals say that it’s difficult to know how much pressure they use with an electric toothbrush, while others say that because of the rapid electrical movements, they tend to be more gentle on their gums. Regardless of the toothbrush brand, make sure you get soft bristles and replace it every three to four months.

Special consideration should be taken for individuals with arthritis. Some Valrico area cosmetic dentistry practices advise their elderly and arthritic patients to use electric toothbrushes when their manual dexterity is limited. As for kids, once they are old enough, an electric toothbrush may be preferable, but safety should always be the first concern for Tampa parents. Additionally, Dr. Bynum guides patients to only purchase dental products that carry the ADA seal. If you have questions about your toothbrush, or any of the other services we offer including dental implants, dental veneers or gum disease treatment, call us today.

When it comes to the toothbrush, old school is just fine.

Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

Tampa porcelain veneers

Believe it or not plaque can rear its ugly head in anyone’s mouth – even yours – no matter how meticulous you try to be. If you have deep grooves, watch out. If you have a receding gum line, watch out. If you are a candy-loving Valrico resident with the proverbial sweet tooth, watch out.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

. We encourage anyone in the Tampa area who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.
