Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

Tampa porcelain veneers

Believe it or not plaque can rear its ugly head in anyone’s mouth – even yours – no matter how meticulous you try to be. If you have deep grooves, watch out. If you have a receding gum line, watch out. If you are a candy-loving Valrico resident with the proverbial sweet tooth, watch out.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

. We encourage anyone in the Tampa area who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a significant investment but the truth of just how much it will cost for veneers, braces, dental implants and even teeth whitening may surprise you. At our cosmetic dentistry office you can expect to learn about Invisalign, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, teeth whitening, sedation dentistry and any number of other dental services.

You Can’t Afford Cheap Dental Work

Valrico teeth whitening

Have you ever gotten a deal on a used car that turned out to be a lemon? After a couple years of nonstop repairs, you realized that it ended up costing as much as a new car would have. And after spending all that money, you still have a a clunker.

The same is true of inferior dental work. You have probably received shiny postcard ads that advertise amazing inflicts on cosmetic dentistry: porcelain veneers, crowns, white fillings, and dental implants. The prices may be enticing, but make certain you do plenty of research before committing. We aren’t trying to imply that all dental practices that proclaim low procedure prices in their ads deliver inferior work – we are just cautioning patients not to decide on a cosmetic dentist based on price alone. Unlike an automobile, you can’t sell your smile and buy a new one.

We will use porcelain veneers as an example. What can go amiss if you fall victim to substandard porcelain veneers?

  • The dentist may be inexperienced and make mistakes: improper placement, poor color matching, bite complications.

  • The materials may be inferior: unnatural color, prone to breaking, veneers pop off.

  • The lab techs that create the restorations may turn out poor quality work: unnatural color, poor fit.

If you are considering a smile transformation, speak with Dr. Jeff Bynum at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS first. During your consultation, you will learn about Dr. Bynum’s years of experience, techniques, specialty training, number of procedures performed, the most appropriate materials for the restorations, and details about the dental lab we use. We can also provide references if requested. And, of course, we will talk about how much each procedure will cost. We are certain that you will find that our prices our competitive for the first-rate dentistry Dr. Bynum delivers.

Don’t compromise your smile in an attempt to save some money. You really do get what you pay for.

Hello, I’m Dr. Bynum of Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in Valrico. I am passionate about upgrading smiles through cosmetic dentistry. Few physical improvements have such a dramatic influence on attractiveness and self-confidence as a smile makeover. Excellent oral health and a pleasing smile contribute to overall physical health and a high quality of life.

If you have ever wondered how cosmetic dentistry could change your life, I invite you to schedule a consultation so we can talk about it. • You can see before and after pictures of smile makeover patients.
  • Your options for how to schedule the procedures (all at once or over time).
  • Information about conscious sedation.
  • Answers to any questions or concerns.
  • Cosmetic dentistry costs and financing options.

Are You Getting Your Dose Of D?

pediatric dentist

Most people know that vitamin D is important for healthy teeth and bones, but many of us fail to get adequate amounts. Today’s article is a friendly reminder to our patients – especially expectant mothers – about the importance of vitamin D.

Here is a sampling of vitamin D findings from around the web:

“Several recent reports demonstrate a significant association between periodontal health and the intake of vitamin D.” 1

“Researchers who took a second look at a series of clinical trials conducted on 2,000 children in several countries between the 1920s and 1980s determined vitamin D — which we often garner from sunlight — was associated with around a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.”2

“Inadequate vitamin D levels in pregnant women may be associated with dental caries in their children during the first year of life.”3

“The sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, but it is hard to quantify how much vitamin D you get from time in the sun and the risk of skin cancer may outweigh the benefits. Food first, says Baylor College of Medicine dietitian Keli Hawthorne. “Supplements can fill in the gaps but it is always better to try to meet your nutritional needs with foods that contain fiber, phytonutrients, and so much more,” Unless you enjoy a diet that includes fatty fish or fish liver oils, it may be hard to get enough vitamin D naturally without eating fortified foods or taking a supplement. “The major dietary source of vitamin D comes from fortified diary, along with some yogurts and cereals,” Hawthorne says. Mushrooms, eggs, cheese, and beef liver contain small amounts.” 4

I’m Jeff Bynum of Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in Valrico. I encourage all of my patients to practice preventative medicine by eating a healthy diet complete with all vital nutrients. We offer the full complement of dental services. Ask us about dental crowns, teeth whitening, or porcelain veneers.

We are currently accepting new patients, and my friendly team of dental professionals would love to serve your family with all of their dental needs. You can schedule an appointment by calling 813-413-7518.

Is Your Smile In A World Of Hurt?

full mouth reconstruction Tampa

Do you have extreme tooth damage, bone loss, or few or no teeth still intact? This post is for Tampa area residents whose mouths are in a world of hurt.

First off, we feel for you. We understand how severe dental problems influence you every day of your life.

Whatever the cause of the condition – chemotherapy, recreational drug use, eating disorder, severe mouth injury, disability, inadequate oral hygiene, or simply poor overall health – there is hope.

Full mouth reconstruction can restore your previously healthy, pleasing smile or give you the unforgettable smile you never had. Patients who undergo full mouth reconstruction regain their confidence to smile, eat, and speak normally. How would that affect your life?

Replacing missing teeth and adding bone through grafting restores underlying facial structure, improving or preventing that “sunk-in” look that develops when teeth are gone and the jawbone recedes.

Full mouth reconstruction (sometimes called full mouth restoration) is a term which refers to a combination of dental procedures that restore a smile for people with numerous damaged or missing teeth. Treatment may include any combination of the following procedures: crowns, inlays/onlays, dental bonding, white filling replacement, tooth implants, porcelain veneers, implant-anchored dentures, gum contouring, soft tissue grafts, bone grafts, and tooth whitening.

Dental implants are typically the best tooth replacement for patients with missing teeth. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. If there is not enough bone to anchor an implant, bone grafting may be completed to augment existing bone. The post integrates with the bone to provide a durable foundation for the abutment and beautiful crown. Dental implants are indistinguishable from former teeth in both form and function.

If you currently have dentures, talk to us about implant-anchored full or partial dentures. Significant improvements can be made even if you only get two or three tooth implants.

Crowns (sometimes called caps) are used when there is enough viable tooth structure that the tooth doesn’t need to be extracted. A crown adds strength to a tooth that has a large filling or has been injured. A crown can correct a bite misalignment and is usually required after a root canal. In a dental implant procedure, attaching the crown to the abutment is the final step.

Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS offers a full menu of cosmetic dental care including total mouth reconstruction. Cosmetic dentistry may be more economical than you think. Talk to us about financing or a multi-procedure treatment schedule that allows you to pay as you go. Restoring a healthy smile may be the best investment you ever make.

How Do You Measure Dental Success?

Valrico affordable family dentist

How do you measure “dental success?”A check-up with no cavities? A perfect smile? A crown that looks as natural as the surrounding teeth?

It could mean all those things and many more.

Dental success could be defined as a childhood free of cavities, learning daily dental hygiene practices, and gaining an understanding of why it’s important.

For children who are hesitant to smile because of misaligned teeth, dental success may mean getting braces to restore their confidence and boost self-esteem.

For a middle-aged man who neglected his teeth in his youth, dental success could be defined as restorative dentistry that stabilizes his dental condition and improves his oral health.

For a woman with tetracycline stains but otherwise healthy teeth, dental success may be as simple as speedy in-office same-day tooth whitening.

Consider a person with several missing teeth who can only eat soft foods. Dental success might require natural-looking implant-anchored dentures that allow them to eat steak for the first time in years.

What are your goals for your smile? What is the current state of your oral health? Schedule a consultation with Jeff Bynum.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, our goal is your complete satisfaction. We are enthusiastic about providing patient-focused dental care of the highest standard. We look forward to discussing your goals. You could be our next success story!

A Dentist’s Indispensable Tool

Brandon FL cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Providing quality dental care is much easier for dentists when they have extensive, comprehensive information about their patients’ oral health – and pictures are far more accurate than written notes. To go a step further: pictures that show what’s going on below the visible surface of your teeth and gums are worth even more than a thousand words. So, along with a thorough oral exam, most dentists want complete and up-to-date x-rays.

The frequency of x-rays is largely determined by your age as well as the state of your oral health. Because children are growing and they experience more changes to their teeth, they usually need x-rays more often.

X-rays also help dentists find cavities, evaluate gum health, and identify any major changes to your teeth and mouth.

Safety is an important issue that all dentists consider when ordering x-rays, because low levels of radiation are used to obtain the images. Many important precautions are taken to limit exposure, such as putting leaded aprons and collars on the patients.

It is essential that women inform their dentist if they are pregnant because special considerations should be taken.

To Chew Or Not To Chew

To Chew Or Not To Chew In Valrico

Hello, gum chewers, today we’re going to talk about that sticky wad in your mouth. You know that it can freshen your breath, but can it really help protect your smile from dental caries?

It really depends on the type of gum. Chewing regular sucrose-based gum can be helpful in removing bits of food from the surface of teeth, but that benefit is negated by the stream of sugar washing over your teeth as you chew.

However, gum with some alternative sweeteners has an added benefit for your pearly whites. Xylitol is a sweetener which not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but it also has antimicrobial properties that reduce plaque build-up. This means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay.

So if you’re headed out to a restaurant, bring a pack of sugar-free gum with you and pop it in your mouth when your meal is done. Of course, brushing and flossing are the prime practices for your oral health, but when you can’t brush, select a sugarless gum with xylitol.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum of Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS. We offer Invisalign, porcelain veneers, and dental crowns. If you have any questions about how to brighten your oral health, or if you would like information about any of our innovative cosmetic dental services such as teeth whitening, veneers, or complete smile redesigns, give us a call today at 813-413-7518.
