4 Smile Boosters

Plant City cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Hi, my name is Dr. Jeff Bynum. My dental practice, Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, has been serving the Valrico, Florida area since 1996. Today in my Tampa dental blog, I would like to highlight four ways you can improve your smile.

1. Teeth Whitening is quick and non-invasive. External tooth whitening occurs when teeth whitening agents bleach the teeth directly. This can be done in your home or in the office of your dentist.

2. Dental Implants are another common procedure that many Valrico residents seek. A dental implant is secured into the jawbone to replace the roots of a lost tooth. A dental crown is then attached to the implant to replace the missing tooth. Along with improving the appearance and restoring tooth function, the dental implant does double-duty by helping to maintain bone support.

3. Dental Bonding can be done with various materials such as porcelain and composite resins. With recent advances in cosmetic dental services, these materials can more precisely replicate natural tooth structure and natural appearance. This procedure is commonly used to correct chipped or cracked teeth.

4. Periodontal Plastic Surgery is an extraordinary solution for gum recession and cosmetic irregularities. You can remove a “gummy smile” or remedy an uneven gum line.

I hope this post has helped you to get better acquainted with some highly effective cosmetic dentistry treatments. A combination of procedures can be used to give Valrico dental patients a complete smile redesign.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Tampa

Here at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS we approach all your oral health needs from two separate angles—what we can do in our dental practice and what you can do at home.

For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office, there are safe and effective methods for bleaching yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes less expensive.

Additionally, we guide you regarding food and drink choices that can impact your whitened smile. Be aware of staining agents such as coffee, tea, tobacco, and soda. We understand that abstaining from these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary beverage can cut down on the contact your teeth have with it and help neutralize the acids. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to a buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can negate the results of teeth whitening.

If you are interested in making improvements to your smile and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and contact the incredible staff at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS today 813-653-2273. Dr. Jeff Bynum, DDS, takes pride in providing knowledgeable care and expertise when treating patients.

Come discover the personal attention with dental crowns, the patient and steady hand with teeth whitening, the wise and thorough instruction relating to Invisalign. Once you’ve scheduled a consultation, expect expert guidance that will make your daily oral care and lifestyle choices productive and meaningful.

When it comes to hygiene and healthy teeth we are a practice that wants to see you as little as possible. (It’s not that we don’t love you—we just want you to have a healthy smile!) If we only see you twice a year for regular checkups then we’ve done our job. Check out our website at http://www.fivestardentalcare.com/ or come in for an evaluation and recommendations.

Dr. Bynum provides the full spectrum of dental services from cosmetic dentistry to restorative dentistry to dental implants.

Not All Smile Makeovers Are Created Equal

Plant City cosmetic smile makeover

Hello Valrico! Welcome to the Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS dental blog. Let’s talk about smile transformations. Some Valrico patients wonder if the term is synonymous with general cosmetic dentistry.

Are the placement of four porcelain veneers considered a smile makeover? Well, yes and no. If your smile is attractive and healthy except for some chips in your upper front teeth, veneer placement may remedy the few cosmetic problems and result in a beautiful smile.

Generally, however, a complete smile makeover combines several carefully-chosen cosmetic dentistry procedures performed at the same time for a complete smile transformation. In other words, the sum is greater than the parts.

For example, one treatment plan could include crown restorations, veneers for teeth that are misshapen but otherwise healthy, a tooth-colored filling replacement for old amalgam fillings, and teeth whitening for the crowning touch.

I am Dr. Jeff Bynum. I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry in Valrico, Florida since 1996. Performing successful smile transformations makes my profession extremely fulfilling. Patients who plan to receive a smile makeover should take their time choosing a dentist to perform it. I invite you to schedule a consultation so we can discuss your needs and wishes. During the consultation, I can tell you about my extensive experience and show you before and after pictures of satisfied patients.

When I design a custom smile makeover, I study several elements in addition to the teeth. After all, the teeth are just one component of the patient’s face. The gumline, lips, mouth, facial shape, facial structure, coloring, and patient’s age affect the scope of the design. This comprehensive approach to a smile makeover achieves amazing results and sets our practice apart.

There Is Hope For Denture Wearers

Brandon FL tooth implants

The condition of your teeth has a significant impact on your health and happiness. Denture wearers understand this all too well. The path from dental health to a toothless mouth is downhill. Tooth decay and gum disease are painful. Treatment such as fillings and root canals can strain the budget. If the teeth can’t be saved, tooth extraction brings more physical and psychological pain. Extraction can result in bone recession.

The Drawbacks of Dentures

While dentures are preferable to having no teeth at all, they certainly come with a myriad of drawbacks. They can irritate gums and make breathing, eating, tasting food, talking, and laughing difficult. And dentures are not a once-and-your-done answer for missing teeth. As the jaw shrinks, they require relines.

Stop The Progression

But there is a reason for hope! Dental implant technology can improve the quality of life for people who have been wearing conventional dentures. To a certain extent, implants halt the downhill progression of declining oral health due to tooth loss.

Dental implants can be used to replace several teeth and/or anchor overdentures. Mini dental implants (also called denture-stabilization implants) allow your dentist to securely attach an appliance so that it won’t slip or irritate gums. Small titanium posts are placed into the jawbone and fuse with the surrounding bone, creating a strong base for an overdenture.

Restore Chewing Ability

Did you know that some denture users retain only ten percent of their chewing capacity? Implant-supported dentures can stop the bone recession and restore near-normal chewing ability. Improved chewing function with implants can result in better nutrition and overall physical health and well-being. The psychological benefits are equally valuable. When Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS patients are free of embarrassing denture-slipping, they are happier, more sure of themselves, and socialize more frequently.

Before you spend money on another denture reline, talk to your dentist about denture-stabilization implants.

Bridging The Gap

cosmetic dental Valrico

Hello, Valrico smiles! Do you have a missing tooth that is detracting from your otherwise attractive teeth? Let Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS fill the gap for you and help you get your stunning smile back! A dental bridge could be the perfect solution for your missing tooth and help you chew and speak properly.

A bridge consists of two or more crowns on either side of the gap created by your missing tooth. These two anchoring teeth allow a false tooth to be held in the place where the missing tooth should be. The false tooth that is placed in the gap is called a pontic. Bridges can contain one or more pontics. A pontic can be matched to the surrounding teeth if you decide on a porcelain material. If you’d like, a pontic can also be constructed using gold or an alloy.

Dr. Bynum will work closely with you to make certain that your bridge has a precise fit. Then one of our experienced hygienists will show you how to clean under and around the bridge to ensure that no cavities develop in the nooks and crannies.

Dr. Bynum has been successfully restoring smiles since 1996. Thousands of patients have trusted Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS with their dental health.

Come see us at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS and you can bridge the gap and love your smile again!

Children’s Dental Restorations

There is more than one way to fix a child’s tooth. Whether it’s decay or a crack, we have a restoration option.

Today’s post looks at three pediatric tooth restoration procedures we provide to repair a damaged tooth:

1. Dental Bonding

Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair chips, cracks, stains, and make teeth longer. It is also sometimes used to fill cavities. Your dentist applies a pliable composite resin and molds it to the specific shape required. The resin is then hardened with a special curing light.

2. A Filling (Inlay or Onlay)

A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab, they are usually called indirect fillings. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are frequently smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

3. A Dental Crown

A dental crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, strength, and function. Crowns are used for teeth that have had a root canal, teeth with severe decay, or the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Crowns can be made of all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-ceramic, or all resin.

It’s critical to restore both primary and permanent teeth. If your child has a cavity or damaged tooth, don’t delay treatment.

For more information about any of these restoration procedures, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-653-2273.

Soft, Medium, Or Buzz Lightyear?

Affordable Dentistry in Valrico At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, Dr. Jeff Bynum is often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush can be as hard as choosing a paint color, and there seem to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of your local grocery store or drugstore lately, you know what I am talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up. (If I had to rate them purely on their fun factor, I would choose the Spiderman brush.)

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes freshen your breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you pick the best one?

One essential factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can weaken your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to wipe plaque, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having dental work or oral surgery, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, ensure that you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When deciding on a toothbrush for a child, make sure the brush feels comfortable in his or her hand. If the size and angle feel awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized toothbrush. Some kids can manage an adult size brush better than a short, narrow child-size brush. If you are unsure, ask your dentist.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some people like the feeling of oscillating bristles or a mini-squirt gun squirting away at the plaque. People with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off hands and arm muscles.

Is your toothbrush doing the job? Schedule an exam at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, our knowledgeable dental hygienists instruct our patients and on proper brushing and flossing. If you haven’t experienced a dental deep cleaning at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, you don’t know how clean your teeth and gums can feel.

Do You Eat A Smile-Healthy Diet?

Valrico teeth bleaching best price

Today’s post explains how specific foods and eating practices impact our oral health.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids. It is the acids that begin to assault enamel and initiate decay for people of all ages. Fruits have high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing so they aren’t really no-no’s. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes and pies that are.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to minimize the acidic effects. It is a good idea to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken, other meats, nuts, and milk. The calcium and phosphorus will promote tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more frequently you eat the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be moderated by choosing healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are to not only eat unhealthy foods but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

I’m Jeff Bynum, DDS at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS. Keeping Patients Calm Since 1996

sleep dentistry Valrico

Are you or a family member apprehensive about going to the dentist? Has a past experience with pain or discomfort caused you to start panicking when you think about having your teeth worked on? Have you neglected to go to the dentist and fear the amount of work that might need to be completed?

If your past or current situation is causing a lot of dread, there are options available to assuage your fear and reduce (or completely eliminate) your pain with the necessary services. Oral sedation (sometimes called sleep dentistry) has helped countless Tampa dental patients calmly undergo dental treatment. It is not an experimental procedure but has been used safely in various forms since the 1800s.

To discuss sleep dentistry, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-653-2273 to schedule a no-pressure consultation. Dr. Bynum will explain your sedation options and answer any questions. If you elect sedation, Dr. Bynum will refer you to a specialist if required (depending on the type of sedation used).

It is essential to understand the difference between topical analgesics and sedation which are used both alone and simultaneously. Analgesics help numb the gums and nerves connected with your teeth so you don’t feel the pain. Sedation medications affect the nervous system and transfer a feeling of peace and relaxation. You may choose to be minimally sedated, where you are peaceful but still awake, or settle upon general anesthesia which renders you completely unconscious. Together, these two solutions dramatically improve the treatment experience for patients suffering from dental anxiety, a very common condition.

Regardless of the type and level of sedation, you decide to use, Dr. Bynum will proceed with patience and understanding. Oral sedation helps with making your dental visit serene so you can treat all of your dental issues and restore your health. Taking care of decay, infections, and other serious problems bring peace of mind and reduce the risk of further damage including tooth loss.

Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in Valrico is committed to oral health and complete patient satisfaction from the first visit through completion of treatment. We offer premium dental care including Invisalign, porcelain veneers and dental crowns.

Replace Old Silver Fillings

white fillings Valrico

Superficial cuts in the skin subside without a trace, infections are killed with antibiotics, broken bones mend, and inflamed tissues abate. Our teeth, unfortunately, can’t regenerate. Decay can be halted in its progress, but scientists are still years away from actual enamel regeneration. That’s why the team at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS strongly emphasizes preventative dentistry.

The healthiest mouths have all teeth intact and free of current or former cavities. But how many smiles can boast such an admirable record? Very few.

The stark reality is that most individuals get one or more cavities over the course of their lifetime.

In fact, most people in Florida probably don’t even know someone who has never had a cavity. Tooth decay is second only to the common cold as the most prevalent health trouble in childhood. When we reach middle age, many of us have even had a root canal or two.

Depending on the size of the cavity, after cleaning and preparing the tooth, Dr. Bynum can fill it, place a crown, or perform a root canal (usually followed by a crown).

Restorations Have Come a Long Way
Modern restorations have many advantages over those in years past. There are stronger and more natural-looking materials. Many of our patients at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS who have not had a filling for a while, are not aware that white fillings are available. You can even replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings and give your mouth a makeover!

As we said before, when a tooth is by injury or decay, it is never exactly the way it was before. But now, with modern fillings and crowns, it can regain durability and beauty.
