Dental Technology in Valrico: Fight The Evil Cavity-Causing Sorceress

Dental Technology in Valrico

A smartphone or tablet could be the next critical stop of dental technology in Valrico to help children develop effective dental hygiene habits. A game called Toothsavers is one of the apps that focus on dental health.

Are You Ready Player 1?

In the intriguing Toothsavers game (designed for ages 3 – 6), children try to save characters from an evil sorceress who inflicts cavities and other dental ailments on residents of her kingdom. Players use their fingers to ‘clean’ the characters’ teeth in the game. The game is designed to encourage young children to brush correctly for two minutes, two times a day and create awareness of the importance of correct oral hygiene. Toothsavers was created by the American Dental Association and Ad Council in partnership with 35 other organizations.

“Mobile technology plays a major role in influencing young people’s behavior and is a great fit for this campaign. We’re thrilled to release our first mobile game, which represents our ongoing efforts to use technology to promote health, education and well-being. We look forward to using this app to help kids maintain healthy oral health habits, and have fun while doing it!Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council.

The game allows young children to time and log their toothbrushing. It also has alerts to remind them when it’s time to brush. As part of the game, users watch fun two-minute informative videos while they brush their teeth (in the real world). A new character is unlocked each day a player watches a video while brushing morning and night. The free app can be downloaded at the App Store or Google Play.

Advanced Dental Technology in Valrico

In addition to proper toothbrushing, establishing a relationship with a trusted family dentist is critical for keeping kid’s smiles healthy. If you are looking for a children’s dentist with advanced dental technology in Valrico, we invite you to set up a consultation. We can guide you on children’s dental health topics including thumb-sucking, sealants, mouth protection for sports, orthodontia, and fluoride supplementation. We also offer other services, such as restorative dentistry and gum disease treatment.

Dental Health in Valrico: Have You Made An Appointment Yet?

dental health in valrico

An appointment at Five Star Dental Care twice a year is essential to your dental health in Valrico, and to your overall health. By seeing us for a check up, you’ll get the peace of mind that comes with knowing your teeth and gums are healthy – and you’ll have a great smile, to boot.

Dental Visit at Five Star Dental Care

A typical appointment is in two parts. First, one of our hygienists gives your teeth a thorough cleaning. That in itself is worth coming in for. But part two, the checkup, is just as important, because we’ll take x-rays, check for any cavities, make sure your gums are healthy, and look for signs of any problems like bruxism, also known as teeth grinding.

Seeing us twice a year is also a great way to protect your dental health in Valrico. We won’t give you a wellness exam like your doctor, of course. But there are more than a hundred systemic diseases that can be detected in the mouth. We can find signs of diseases before you even know about them.

Discussing Dental Hygiene at Home

In between your visits, make sure you take care of your teeth and gums at home. That means a daily regimen of flossing and brushing. We recommend at least twice a day; after every meal is even better. That way you are consistently removing that plaque that is constantly forming on your teeth. Furthermore, wait one hour after eating to brush your teeth. The acids from your meal could cause your enamel to soften, and brushing right after you eat could cause you to damage your dental health in Valrico little by little.

Schedule Your Appointment

If you haven’t scheduled your next checkup and cleaning with Five Star Dental Care, pick up the phone and give us a call. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry services such as porcelain veneers, Invisalign clear braces, teeth whitening, and dental crowns. Make an appointment by calling us at

Beware Of Hidden Sugar

preventative dentistry in Riverview FL We advise our Riverview FL dental patients at Five Star Dental Care to watch their sugar intake to prevent cavities and other health problems.

If you are trying to unsweeten your diet, you are probably skipping the usual suspects: candy, soda, and baked treats. But not all sugar is as obvious as the frosting on a piece of chocolate cake or the powdery stuff in a pixie stix.

Here are some foods found in Riverview grocery stores and Brandon school cafeterias with a surprisingly high sugar content:

  • Ketchup
  • Low fat versions of snack foods (Manufacturers often replace fat with sugar.)
  • Salad dressing
  • Breads, buns, and rolls
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Protein bars
  • Granola
  • Canned soup
  • Peanut butter
  • Yogurt
  • Fast food meals (Hamburgers, fries, sandwiches, and salads are often loaded with sugar, not to mention the dessert items.)
  • Antacids
  • Cough drops
  • Fruit smoothies (Even a small serving has a whopping amount of sugar.)

Reading the fine print on labels is a must. The following terms are all types of sugar:

raw sugar, cane sugar, glucose, lactose, galactose, fructose, dextrose, honey, sorghum, molasses, cane sugar, confectioner’s sugar, crystallized cane juice, invert sugar, maltodextrin (or dextrin), maple syrup, concentrated fruit juices, evaporated cane juice (what kind of cane do you think they are talking about?)

Do the math: when shopping at Riverview markets or health food stores, carefully decipher food labels before you buy. Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. Add up all the grams of every type of sugar listed and divide by four to truly understand how much sugar an item contains.

At Five Star Dental Care, we advocate and practice preventative care for lifelong dental health. For more information on how your diet affects your dental health, contact us at 813-653-2273. If you have a toddler or child who has not yet visited a dentist, call us today for a pediatric oral examination and information on fluoride and sealants.

We are located at 3203 Lithia Pinecrest Rd in Valrico.

Five Star Dental Care in Valrico Cares For Teeth

Let Your Dentist In Valrico Care For Your Teeth Dentists in Valrico are concerned with your oral health and thus care about the condition of your mouth and all of your many teeth. At Five Star Dental Care we recognize that your teeth help you both eat and speak. You use your teeth to tear, scrape, and chew food, as well as to form words with your tongue. Teeth are an important part of your oral health and Five Star Dental Care located in Valrico, Florida wants to help keep your mouth and teeth healthy.

We humans have two sets of teeth in our lifetime. The first set are your ‘primary teeth’, which many folks around Valrico often call ‘baby teeth’. Baby teeth typically start to come in at about 6 months old. An average healthy mouth for a Valrico resident has a total of 20 primary teeth by about age 5.

Your primary teeth will eventually fall out and new teeth known as ‘permanent teeth’ will grow in. Permanent teeth typically begin to come in around age 6 for most Valrico residents, but every person is unique and it could be a little earlier or later. By about age 13 an average healthy mouth should have 28 of the total 32 permanent teeth. The last four permanent teeth may or may not come, but typically come in between the ages of 17 and 21 if they do. Because of the late age that these last teeth come in they are commonly called ‘wisdom teeth’.

Many adults in the city of Valrico have their wisdom teeth pulled out because these teeth can be problematic to your oral health, such as crowding a mouth. Other adults in the Valrico area may not have these teeth pulled out because they are not causing problems. If you are concerned about the state of your wisdom teeth, you can visit our local Valrico office and we can help you make a decision.

Caring for all of your teeth whether you are young and have 20 primary teeth or are an adult and have 28 to 32 permanent teeth is important for your overall health. Visiting your Valrico dentist regularly, and brushing and flossing daily are great ways to care for your many teeth. Five Star Dental Care located in Valrico, cares about you oral health and can be reached by phone at 813-653-2273.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile In Valrico

Brandon FL Residents Should Have Their Teeth Checked By Cosmetic Dentist

Hi, I’m Jeff Bynum of Five Star Dental Care. If you are one of my existing patients, welcome back. If this is your first visit, I appreciate you stopping by.

My knowledgeable team and I love taking care of our Valrico, Brandon FL, and Riverview FL patients.

Today’s article is for Valrico area people who are overdue for a cleaning and exam.

During dental deep cleanings, our hygienists thoroughly remove the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. By scaling and planing, they remove areas where bacteria can easily multiply. If you are due for a cleaning, call us today at 813-653-2273
to schedule.

After your teeth have been cleaned, I perform a thorough examination. I check for overall tooth and gum health, the presence of cavities, gum pocket depth, bite issues, and signs of oral cancer.

Some Valrico people mistakenly believe that they can skip dental visits if they don’t notice anything out of the ordinary. This attitude is risky. Many dental problems advance silently leading to need for expensive treatment such as dental crowns. When the patient experiences pain, much damage has been done. Gum disease, especially, often progresses unnoticed.

If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about dental financing options. It costs far less to prevent problems than to treat them after they have become severe. For instance, you could lose a tooth because of decay and need a dental implant to replace it.

If you perform regular auto maintenance, you understand the wisdom of prevention. Don’t you value your smile far more than your car? Call Five Star Dental Care today to schedule preventative maintenance for your irreplaceable smile.

Teeth: What Have They Done For You Lately?

Brandon FL Dentist And Your Teeth

Welcome to the Valrico dental blog! Today we are going to look at the secret life of our teeth.

The shape of each tooth gives a clue to what it does. The incisors, or your front teeth, are sharp. They need to be because they are there to cut food and their curvature helps move food inside the mouth.

Behind the incisors, you find the canine teeth. Their roots go far into the jaw bone because they are designed to hold onto food and tear through it.

Premolars, found just behind the canines, are flat on the surface. This allows them to crush your food as you chew. And, finally, in the very back are the molars. They are large and have nice, flat chewing surfaces that help them to grind food down into smaller, more digestible pieces.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum, a local Valrico dentist, and I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little more about the different teeth in your mouth.
If you are in the Valrico, Brandon FL, or Riverview FL area and would like to make an appointment at my practice, Five Star Dental Care, please give us a call at 813-653-2273. We can schedule an appointment and tell you about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening in Valrico.

If you’ve ever been interested in a smile makeover, come on in and we’ll discuss the possibilities. I want my Valrico dental patients to have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. At Five Star Dental Care, we offer comprehensive dental services including:

dental implants
porcelain veneers
dental crowns

Protecting Your Valrico Athlete’s Teeth

Avoid A Dental Emergency In Valrico Do you have a son or daughter that plays Valrico youth sports? Soccer, baseball, football, basketball and gymnastics can be very dangerous to your child’s teeth. Football is a violent contact sport, yet there is a relatively low rate of tooth injuries that occur in football as compared to other contact sports. Why? Football players are required to wear a mouth guard and a helmet.

Inexpensive athletic dental mouth guards are worth their weight in gold!

If you or your child participates in a contact sport in Valrico and does not currently wear a tooth protection device, you may want to purchase an appropriately-sized mouth guard. They are available at most Valrico athletic supply stores.

At Five Star Dental Care in Valrico, we care about your child’s health and safety. To discuss your dental condition or to learn more about sports-related tooth injury prevention, call us at 813-653-2273. We have been keeping Valrico smiles healthy since 1996. Our friendly staff pampers all of our Valrico cosmetic dentistry patients. Let us show you why we are not an ordinary Valrico dental practice.

Avoid a dental emergency by using a mouth guard when playing contact sports. Call us if you have any questions or would like to learn more about the cosmetic dental services we offer.

Does My Valrico Dentist Care About My Diet?

Valrico Dentist When people in the Valrico area think of diet and oral health, they probably think about the damage sweet drinks can cause to teeth. While it’s true that these sugars cause increased acidity in the mouth and lead to tooth decay, soda and sugary-fruit drinks are only part of the issue.

The typical American diet tends to be high in calories and low in nutrition, even here in the Valrico area.

If your body is lacking in certain nutrients, the tissues in the mouth may have trouble resisting infection. These infections can lead to gum disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently unveiled the MyPlate graphic to illustrate a healthy diet. Half of our meals should be composed of fruits and vegetables and the rest should be equally divided between lean protein, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

While this is an excellent resource, dietary needs change throughout life, so it’s a good idea to call Five Star Dental Care at 813-653-2273 and schedule a check-up with Dr. Jeff Bynum to see if your diet is affecting your teeth.

When you eat a balanced diet and feel your best, you’ll want to look your best, so be sure to ask our knowledgeable staff about the latest cosmetic dentistry procedures such as complete smile makeovers and same day restorations.

At Five Star Dental Care, our menu of services includes crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, dental implants, tooth colored fillings, sealants, teeth whitening, and clear braces. For nervous dental patients, we also offer sedation dentistry, so you can get the comprehensive care you need while staying calm and relaxed during your visit.
