Making The Cost Of Dental Treatment Palatable At Five Star Dental Care

cost of dental work Tampa

A healthy smile is priceless and superior dental care is a worthwhile investment in your quality of life. But the cost for treatment and precision restorations can sometimes be prohibitive. Knowing what to expect price-wise can make your dental visit more palatable.

Obviously, the cost of some procedures such as crowns versus fillings are dependent upon unknown factors. X-rays can show the basic problem but sometimes the extent of the damage isn’t clear until we get in there. Our caring staff works to offer estimates based on best-case and worst-case scenarios.

Nailing down the cost is much easier once the overall treatment plan is established. Dr. Jeff Bynum performs an oral exam, reviews the patient’s dental history, and consults with the patient before creating an estimate. The price is influenced by the patient’s current condition, cosmetic goals, and long-term functionality.

Usually, the cost of treatments such as teeth whitening, dental implants, veneers, denture fittings, and the price of cosmetic dentistry can be explained at the initial consultation with Dr. Bynum. We encourage our patients to take some time to review the options before they choose  which elective procedures to pursue. We never pressure our patients to make a quick decision about something as important as dental treatment.

Here at Five Star Dental Care, we are devoted to customized patient-focused care. Often the treatment plan will be extended over several visits to allow healing and adjustment in the mouth before doing more work.

With restorations, the most conservative treatment is always preferred. The cost is weighed with priority for adequate eating and speaking functionality. Personal confidence in appearance is also taken into account and given priority.

Dr. Bynum has been practicing dentistry since 1996. If you are in the market for teeth whitening or porcelain veneers but are worried about how much it will set you back or whether your insurance company covers the procedure, then call 813-413-7518 today and let us look into it for you.

Feel free to shop around and compare our economical prices to other dentists in the area – but be wary of bargain-basement dental advertisements. Many ads present a false picture of the actual cost of the treatment. And, do you really want to trust your smile to the lowest bidder?

Thank you for visiting our blog.

Gritting Your Teeth: Stress And Your Smile

Valrico how stress hurts your teeth

Doctors have been telling us for years that stress can increase the risk of everything from high blood pressure to depression. But how often do we think about how stress affects our smile? Here are some dental problems linked to stress.

Canker and Cold Sores
Cold sores are a symptom of the herpes simplex virus. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes canker sores but suspect they are related to infection, virus, or a weak immune system. If you are prone to mouth sores, you probably already know that stress seems to bring them on or increase healing times. If you frequently get these sores, communicate with your doctor or dentist. Your healthcare provider can advise you on medications, diet, and stress reduction techniques.

Teeth Grinding

It’s no surprise that teeth grinding (bruxism) is bad for teeth. It starts with enamel wear, then loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. During this progression, there may be other issues such as gum recession, headaches, and TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders). If you grind your teeth, it’s vital to address this condition as soon as possible. In addition to stress, there are many factors that can cause or exacerbate bruxism. These include: malocclusion (bad bite), sleep apnea, and prescription depression and anxiety medications.

Your dentist may prescribe an appliance to protect your teeth and keep your jaw in the proper position while you are sleeping. Other treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation therapies, mandibular advancement devices, physical therapy, and medication. Your dentist can create a treatment plan and work with you and your doctor to manage or eliminate this condition.

Temporomandibular Disorders
There are many direct and indirect causes of TMD. For example, inability to manage stress may cause jaw clenching which, in turn, causes pain in the jaw joint. Other symptoms of TMD include tenderness, pain, or swelling in the neck, ear, face, or shoulder; popping or clicking sounds; and changes in bite alignment. Again, if you experience any of these, communicate with your dentist.

Gum Disease
Stress can reduce your ability to fight plaque build-up which can cause gum disease.

Oral Hygiene
Some people overlook brushing and flossing when life becomes problematic.

Diet
It’s not uncommon for people to consume more sugar, snack more often between meals, or drink more alcoholic beverages when experiencing increased stress. All this at a time when vigilant oral hygiene is frequently not a person’s first priority!

Tooth pain and untreated dental issues will only give you something else to worry about. Let’s nip this vicious cycle in the bud.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum. If you haven’t seen a dentist in a while and are experiencing an unusually stressful period, I invite you to schedule an appointment with me by calling Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-413-7518. Let’s determine the status of your oral health, schedule treatment if needed, and create a plan to restore and maintain a healthy smile. Remember, a healthy smile will give you one less thing to worry about.

Quirky Dental Facts That May Surprise You

Brandon FL cosmetic dental and tooth implants

In today’s Five Star Dental Care post, we share some fun facts about dentistry. Enjoy!

  • Many dental patients are aware that before there was formal dental training and licensing, barbers often performed dental procedures. But did you know that blacksmiths also moonlighted as dentists?1 How would you like your dental visit to involve tools used to hammer hot metal?
  • The Mayans were accomplished cosmetic dentists. One smile style in Mayan culture was bejeweled teeth – a procedure that involved the drilling of holes to embed precious gems. That’s a grill with major bling! 1
  • The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. That is enough to fill up two swimming pools.2 (Not a very pleasant image, right?)
  • Nylon toothbrush bristles weren’t introduced until 1938. Prior to that, pig hair was a common bristle material.3 (“Mom, my toothbrush smells like bacon!”)
  • A popular toothache treatment in medieval Germany was to kiss a donkey.3 There is no evidence that it actually worked and it is unknown if the same remedy was used by donkeys.
  • Every person’s tongue is unique – just like a fingerprint.4
  • In medieval Japan, black teeth were considered appealing. Style-conscious women used roots to stain their teeth.3

At Five Star Dental Care, you won’t find pig hair, donkeys, or anvils. You will find trusted dental care and our knowledgeable team of dental professionals. Our menu of services includes: Invisalign, porcelain veneers, and dental crowns. Contact Five Star Dental Care today at 813-653-2273 to schedule an informative consultation.

Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Brandon FL

Dental Sealants - Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Brandon FL

Dental patients in the Brandon FL, Riverview FL, and Plant City areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your Tampa dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.

Many Valrico residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Brandon FL, Riverview FL, or Plant City dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many Florida dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum, an experienced Valrico dentist. Thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the Tampa area by offering:

Invisalign
Porcelain veneers
Dental implants
Teeth whitening
Sedation dentistry

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures, call us today at 813-653-2273 to schedule a consultation.  Our knowledgeable staff would be happy to assist you.

The Dangers of Oral Piercing

The Dangers of Oral Piercing If you live in the Valrico area and are considering puncturing your lip or tongue, read this:

Infection
Your mouth is full of bacteria. Any opening in the tissue carries the risk of infection. The germs from your tongue and mouth can easily get into your bloodstream. Valrico dentists and doctors are continually treating serious infections caused by oral piercings. Oral infections can be a real problem, and should be a major consideration before getting an oral piercing.

Tooth Damage
It should come as no surprise that having a piece of metal bang around in your mouth can easily chip tooth enamel. Though tooth enamel is amazingly strong, once it’s chipped or cracked, it can only be restored with artificial material. Fortunately, Five Star Dental Care in Valrico offers many tooth restoration options such as crowns and fillings, but our advice is to avoid the problem if you can.

Prolonged Bleeding and Swelling
The blood vessels in the tongue are often damaged when the tongue is pierced, causing prolonged bleeding and possible build-up of scar tissue. In some cases, the tongue swells up enough to block the airway.

Gum Recession
A number of periodontal disease studies have shown that wearing oral jewelry is linked to periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease, or ‘gum disease’, can cause gum recession and exposes the root of your teeth, potentially causing hyper sensitivity and pain. Again, our advice is to avoid the problem right from the start.

These are just a few of the dangers. Jeff Bynum at Five Star Dental Care can give you more information about the risks of oral piercings. If you already have damage, call 813-413-7518 to schedule a consultation.

Be Wise About Your Wisdom Teeth, Tampa

Be Wise About Your Wisdom Teeth, Tampa

Hi, I’m Dr. Jeff Bynum, and today in the Valrico dental blog we will be discussing the often misunderstood subject of wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth are sometimes called the third molars because they are even farther back in the mouth than the two sets of regular molars we all have. These four teeth usually erupt when a person is eighteen or nineteen.

Many dentists in the Brandon, Riverview, and Plant City area recommend that wisdom teeth be removed to prevent misplacement in the mouth.

If a wisdom tooth doesn’t fully erupt, it may cause an opening in the gums that can attract bacteria and become infected. Some wisdom teeth are so misplaced that they can actually cause problems with the jaw bone. Both of these conditions can cause severe pain.

If you are in the Tampa area and are wondering if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, call us today at 813-653-2273 to schedule an appointment. We can assess the condition and placement of your wisdom teeth and discuss a treatment plan.

We can also answer any questions you have about smile makeovers. Because there are so many quick and effective cosmetic dentistry procedures available, such as invisible braces, veneers, teeth whitening, and dental implants, anyone in Tampa can have a perfect smile. I love giving my Valrico patients the smiles they’ve always wanted.

Thanks for visiting the Valrico dental blog, and keep Five Star Dental Care in mind for your dental needs. We offer:

Invisalign
Porcelain veneers
Dental crowns
Teeth whitening

We hope to see you soon!

Give Me Some Air

How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists unearthed skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.

Though advanced dentistry would not be possible without drilling, the sound of a dental drill can make many Valrico patient’s hearts pound. However, there is another way your Riverview FL cosmetic dentists can remove decay. This technique is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the affected tooth structure.

The many advantages of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for Brandon family dentists. Because air abrasion is usually pain free, the need for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure. Cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t produce that whiny drill sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less-frightening option for young Brandon FL dentistry patients. Air abrasion is often quicker and more precise than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.

At Five Star Dental Care, we provide anxiety-free dentistry. If you would like to learn more about air abrasion, sedation dentistry or tooth implant cost, call us at 813-653-2273. We are located at 3203 Lithia Pinecrest Rd in Valrico. The knowledgeable staff at Five Star Dental Care is dedicated to your comfort and satisfaction.
