Children’s Dental Restorations

There is more than one way to fix a child’s tooth. Whether it’s decay or a crack, we have a restoration option.

Today’s post looks at three pediatric tooth restoration procedures we provide to repair a damaged tooth:

1. Dental Bonding

Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair chips, cracks, stains, and make teeth longer. It is also sometimes used to fill cavities. Your dentist applies a pliable composite resin and molds it to the specific shape required. The resin is then hardened with a special curing light.

2. A Filling (Inlay or Onlay)

A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab, they are usually called indirect fillings. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are frequently smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

3. A Dental Crown

A dental crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, strength, and function. Crowns are used for teeth that have had a root canal, teeth with severe decay, or the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Crowns can be made of all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-ceramic, or all resin.

It’s critical to restore both primary and permanent teeth. If your child has a cavity or damaged tooth, don’t delay treatment.

For more information about any of these restoration procedures, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-653-2273.

Replace Old Silver Fillings

white fillings Valrico

Superficial cuts in the skin subside without a trace, infections are killed with antibiotics, broken bones mend, and inflamed tissues abate. Our teeth, unfortunately, can’t regenerate. Decay can be halted in its progress, but scientists are still years away from actual enamel regeneration. That’s why the team at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS strongly emphasizes preventative dentistry.

The healthiest mouths have all teeth intact and free of current or former cavities. But how many smiles can boast such an admirable record? Very few.

The stark reality is that most individuals get one or more cavities over the course of their lifetime.

In fact, most people in Florida probably don’t even know someone who has never had a cavity. Tooth decay is second only to the common cold as the most prevalent health trouble in childhood. When we reach middle age, many of us have even had a root canal or two.

Depending on the size of the cavity, after cleaning and preparing the tooth, Dr. Bynum can fill it, place a crown, or perform a root canal (usually followed by a crown).

Restorations Have Come a Long Way
Modern restorations have many advantages over those in years past. There are stronger and more natural-looking materials. Many of our patients at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS who have not had a filling for a while, are not aware that white fillings are available. You can even replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings and give your mouth a makeover!

As we said before, when a tooth is by injury or decay, it is never exactly the way it was before. But now, with modern fillings and crowns, it can regain durability and beauty.

Tonsil Questions?

porcelain veneers price TampaToday in the Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS dental blog, we are going to talk about the two lumps of soft tissue in the back of the throat—the tonsils.

Your tonsils sit at the base of the tongue, one on each side. They are gland-like masses that function as part of the lymphatic system. As such, they are part of your immune system.

Tonsils are made of infection-fighting tissue known as lymphocytes, but, in many cases, tonsils aren’t really that capable at their job of germ-killing and ridding the body of toxins. (Adenoids are made up of similar tissue but are located behind the nasal cavity.)

Your tonsils have plenty of wrinkles where dead cells, mucus, and bacteria can collect, become concentrated, and create white formations in the pockets. In rare cases, it hardens and becomes a tonsil stone or tonsillolith.

Here are some signs of tonsil infection:

Bad breath
Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing
Ear pain
Swelling of tonsils

Some people (often kids) have persistent tonsil infections that eventually require surgical removal of the tonsils. If your tonsils begin to hurt, it’s critical to discuss treatment with your dentist or doctor.

Young children may have difficulty describing where the pain is coming from. If your youngster has persistent sore throats, have your pediatrician check their tonsils.

Regular visits with a pediatrician are essential for your child. Regular dental check-ups are just as vital. If your young child has never seen a dentist, or if you are new to the area and don’t have a children’s dentist, call us at 813-653-2273 to schedule an appointment.

We look forward to meeting you and your child.

Danger Zone! 5 Signs Of Gum Disease

dental payment plans Brandon FLAt Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in the Tampa, FL area, we take our patients’ oral health very seriously; it is part of our ongoing effort to provide the highest quality cosmetic and implant dentistry possible.

Here is some vital news if you care about your dental health too: periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a principal cause of tooth loss among adults. There is also evidence that it is connected to heart disease. Fortunately, this problem is easy to treat if it is found in the early stages.

Here are some of the main warning signs you should be looking for:

  1. Gums that bleed frequently
  2. Gums that appear tender, swollen, or very red, or gums that have visible pus in between them when they are pushed
  3. Your bite changes or your teeth suddenly don’t seem to fit together
  4. Gums that are loosening from the teeth
  5. A bad taste in the mouth or chronic bad breath

Hopefully, you are not noticing any of these symptoms. Besides not brushing and flossing regularly, other factors that put you at risk for gum disease, include smoking, diabetes, genetic pre-disposition, certain medications, and stress. And if you aren’t taking care of your teeth properly, plaque will likely build up on your teeth and turn into tartar that brushing can’t remove. If it isn’t removed, then gingivitis and periodontitis will probably become a problem. And remember, brushing alone is not adequate—make sure you floss daily. Regular check-ups with your dentist is another vital weapon in the fight against gum disease.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS in the Tampa, FL area, our commitment to service begins with our our pride in providing the highest quality of cosmetic and implant dentistry. We consider caring for our patients an honor and want them to have a healthy and attractive smile. Our practice offers Invisalign, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, teeth whitening among a host of other cosmetic and general dentistry services. Call us today to schedule an appointment and to see if a smile makeover is right for you.

Know The Facts About Oral Piercings

health risks of oral piercings ValricoBody piercings are a common form of self-expression. If you have an oral piercing (or are considering getting one) our team at Five Star Dental Care is here to provide insight and information. As your premier dentist office in the Brandon FL area, we believe that you should know about the dangers in advance. Unfortunately, these piercings and the jewelry they accommodate can lead to serious troubles with not only your teeth and mouth, but your entire body. Piercings can bring about tooth damage, tooth decay, periodontal disease, tooth loss, bone recession, compromised immune system function and, in rare cases, death.

In general, any oral piercing is going to increase your risk for an array of detrimental oral infections and complications. The mouth is full of germs and introducing foreign objects permanently is not natural for your body’s health.

A tongue piercing can lead to difficulty chewing with unnatural chewing patterns that may lead to swallowing problems. The jewelry produces excess saliva from the salivary glands, which throws off the natural balance of your oral cavity. Permanent nerve weakening, excessive bleeding, and allergic reactions can also develop.

Metal jewelry also can easily come in contact with your teeth, leading to cracked, chipped, or damaged teeth. The goal is for your teeth to last a lifetime, but chips, cracks, and enamel erosion compromise their durability and shorten their lifespan.

Other complications from piercings may occur when hepatitis and herpes simplex viruses are introduced and even more complications have occurred with bacteria entering the bloodstream. Eventually it lodges in the heart valve and though rare, in some cases such infections are fatal.

Though not technically a piercing, some people drill small holes in their teeth to place rhinestones or other jewelry. Drilling into a tooth is also detrimental for many reasons, including the potential for damage that can make a root canal necessary. The jewelry also can attract bacteria that can directly go into the drilled cavity of the tooth. It’s important to correct problems in the early stages before they become more acute. Do not wait if you suspect you may have a dental or physical problem.

As a leading dentist office in the Brandon FL area, we at Five Star Dental Care encourage our patients with oral piercings to remove their jewelry before it invariably puts their health at risk. However, if you have an oral piercing and plan to keep it, we can share professional advice and ensure that you are on track for regular dental cleanings and check-ups. Call us today to schedule your appointment!

What’s The Difference Between An Inlay And An Onlay?

tooth colored fillings Valrico

If you have tooth sensitivity or pain when you chew with your back teeth, the surface may be damaged. You may be a prime candidate for restorative dentistry in the Tampa area. One option for restoration is the use of an inlay or onlay made of metal, composite resin, or porcelain. Inlays and onlays protect the tooth from further weakening, provide natural function, and are durable and inconspicuous. We do it all at Five Star Dental Care.

Inlays are very strong and shaped to precisely fit a hole in a damaged tooth. Choosing an inlay or onlay depends on how much decay and tooth loss has occurred. An inlay resembles a filling and fills a small part of the tooth, while an onlay covers one or more of the cusps on the top of the tooth. In other words, an inlay fills a hole without changing the shape of the tooth, while an onlay builds up the tooth surface to restore its previous dimension.

The procedure begins with a comprehensive evaluation, oral x-ray, and an impression is made. The damaged area will be removed and then the inlay or onlay will be formed to precisely fit your tooth and bite. While it is being made, your tooth will have a temporary restoration piece to cover and safeguard the vulnerable area.

Finally, the inlay or onlay will be placed and permanently bonded to the tooth. Since the procedure requires removal of damaged tooth material, restoration fabrication at the lab, and the placement on the tooth, it will take a few appointments to carry out the process.

Our team at Five Star Dental Care has been restoring teeth for patients of all ages since 1996. Whether it’s cosmetic dentistry or restorative dentistry that you need,  we would be honored to provide dental services to you. Please don’t hesitate to call and make your appointment today!

4 Reason To Look For The ADA Seal | Oral Health in Valrico

Plant City cosmetic dental and adult braces oral health in valrico

When you go to your drugstore or supermarket looking for toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitener, or another oral care product, be sure that the product you opt for displays the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. Today, we look at 4 ways the ADA seal can help you make good choices for the sake of your oral health in Valrico.

1. Products with the seal have to be safe and effective, so you won’t waste your dollars on something that won’t work, or worse, can harm you.

2. The American Dental Association (ADA) only places their seal on a product after serious scientific testing. This usually means that manufacturers have to meet higher standards than those required by law.

3. When you purchase products with the ADA seal, it’s practically like shopping with your dentist or dental hygienist right by your side! Who wouldn’t want that extra knowledge and information?

4. The ADA seal is not the organization’s recommendation of one particular product or another, but rather is a verification of the assertions made by said product, claims on which savvy consumers can rely.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we care about our patients and their oral health in Valrico. We strive to offer them expert care and advanced dental services to make their lives easier. We also serve patients from Brandon, Riverview, and Plant City areas. Our professional team takes pride in caring for our patients and, like the ADA, we want you to have a healthy and beautiful smile. Our practice offers comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry including the following services: Invisalignporcelain veneers, dental crowns, and teeth whitening. Are All Carbs Created Equal? | Oral Health in Valrico

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Valrico Oral Health in Valrico

Today in the Five Star Dental Care blog, we are focusing on diet and oral health in Valrico. We hope that you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your dental practice for necessary cleanings, but did you know that making small but vital changes to your diet can improve your oral health in Valrico?

Most individuals are aware that the sugar found in candy, cookies, juices, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie. All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to your teeth.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel. Another critical way people can improve their oral health in Valrico is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and harmful gum disease for dental patients, however, wise eating promotes healthy teeth and gums. Our staff at Five Star Dental Care are accepting new general and cosmetic dental patients. We encourage you to call 813-653-2273 today to schedule an exam and cleaning. Five Star Dental Care offers a full menu of general and specialty dental services including cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry.
