Soft, Medium, Or Buzz Lightyear?

Affordable Dentistry in Valrico At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, Dr. Jeff Bynum is often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush can be as hard as choosing a paint color, and there seem to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of your local grocery store or drugstore lately, you know what I am talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up. (If I had to rate them purely on their fun factor, I would choose the Spiderman brush.)

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes freshen your breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you pick the best one?

One essential factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can weaken your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to wipe plaque, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having dental work or oral surgery, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, ensure that you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When deciding on a toothbrush for a child, make sure the brush feels comfortable in his or her hand. If the size and angle feel awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized toothbrush. Some kids can manage an adult size brush better than a short, narrow child-size brush. If you are unsure, ask your dentist.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some people like the feeling of oscillating bristles or a mini-squirt gun squirting away at the plaque. People with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off hands and arm muscles.

Is your toothbrush doing the job? Schedule an exam at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS.

Do You Eat A Smile-Healthy Diet?

Valrico teeth bleaching best price

Today’s post explains how specific foods and eating practices impact our oral health.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids. It is the acids that begin to assault enamel and initiate decay for people of all ages. Fruits have high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing so they aren’t really no-no’s. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes and pies that are.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to minimize the acidic effects. It is a good idea to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken, other meats, nuts, and milk. The calcium and phosphorus will promote tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more frequently you eat the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be moderated by choosing healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are to not only eat unhealthy foods but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

I’m Jeff Bynum, DDS at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS. If cosmetic dentistry, including the cost of veneers, the cost of implants, teeth whitening and the like interest you, call 813-653-2273 to set up a consultation. We can discuss anything from cosmetic dentistry to dental implants. Our knowledgeable staff is ready to make you comfortable.

Replace Old Silver Fillings

white fillings Valrico

Superficial cuts in the skin subside without a trace, infections are killed with antibiotics, broken bones mend, and inflamed tissues abate. Our teeth, unfortunately, can’t regenerate. Decay can be halted in its progress, but scientists are still years away from actual enamel regeneration. That’s why the team at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS strongly emphasizes preventative dentistry.

The healthiest mouths have all teeth intact and free of current or former cavities. But how many smiles can boast such an admirable record? Very few.

The stark reality is that most individuals get one or more cavities over the course of their lifetime.

In fact, most people in Florida probably don’t even know someone who has never had a cavity. Tooth decay is second only to the common cold as the most prevalent health trouble in childhood. When we reach middle age, many of us have even had a root canal or two.

Depending on the size of the cavity, after cleaning and preparing the tooth, Dr. Bynum can fill it, place a crown, or perform a root canal (usually followed by a crown).

Restorations Have Come a Long Way
Modern restorations have many advantages over those in years past. There are stronger and more natural-looking materials. Many of our patients at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS who have not had a filling for a while, are not aware that white fillings are available. You can even replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings and give your mouth a makeover!

As we said before, when a tooth is by injury or decay, it is never exactly the way it was before. But now, with modern fillings and crowns, it can regain durability and beauty.

Tonsil Questions?

porcelain veneers price TampaToday in the Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS dental blog, we are going to talk about the two lumps of soft tissue in the back of the throat—the tonsils.

Your tonsils sit at the base of the tongue, one on each side. They are gland-like masses that function as part of the lymphatic system. As such, they are part of your immune system.

Tonsils are made of infection-fighting tissue known as lymphocytes, but, in many cases, tonsils aren’t really that capable at their job of germ-killing and ridding the body of toxins. (Adenoids are made up of similar tissue but are located behind the nasal cavity.)

Your tonsils have plenty of wrinkles where dead cells, mucus, and bacteria can collect, become concentrated, and create white formations in the pockets. In rare cases, it hardens and becomes a tonsil stone or tonsillolith.

Here are some signs of tonsil infection:

Bad breath
Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing
Ear pain
Swelling of tonsils

Some people (often kids) have persistent tonsil infections that eventually require surgical removal of the tonsils. If your tonsils begin to hurt, it’s critical to discuss treatment with your dentist or doctor.

Young children may have difficulty describing where the pain is coming from. If your youngster has persistent sore throats, have your pediatrician check their tonsils.

Regular visits with a pediatrician are essential for your child. Regular dental check-ups are just as vital. If your young child has never seen a dentist, or if you are new to the area and don’t have a children’s dentist, call us at 813-653-2273 to schedule an appointment.

We look forward to meeting you and your child.

Know The Facts About Oral Piercings

health risks of oral piercings ValricoBody piercings are a common form of self-expression. If you have an oral piercing (or are considering getting one) our team at Five Star Dental Care is here to provide insight and information. As your premier dentist office in the Brandon FL area, we believe that you should know about the dangers in advance. Unfortunately, these piercings and the jewelry they accommodate can lead to serious troubles with not only your teeth and mouth, but your entire body. Piercings can bring about tooth damage, tooth decay, periodontal disease, tooth loss, bone recession, compromised immune system function and, in rare cases, death.

In general, any oral piercing is going to increase your risk for an array of detrimental oral infections and complications. The mouth is full of germs and introducing foreign objects permanently is not natural for your body’s health.

A tongue piercing can lead to difficulty chewing with unnatural chewing patterns that may lead to swallowing problems. The jewelry produces excess saliva from the salivary glands, which throws off the natural balance of your oral cavity. Permanent nerve weakening, excessive bleeding, and allergic reactions can also develop.

Metal jewelry also can easily come in contact with your teeth, leading to cracked, chipped, or damaged teeth. The goal is for your teeth to last a lifetime, but chips, cracks, and enamel erosion compromise their durability and shorten their lifespan.

Other complications from piercings may occur when hepatitis and herpes simplex viruses are introduced and even more complications have occurred with bacteria entering the bloodstream. Eventually it lodges in the heart valve and though rare, in some cases such infections are fatal.

Though not technically a piercing, some people drill small holes in their teeth to place rhinestones or other jewelry. Drilling into a tooth is also detrimental for many reasons, including the potential for damage that can make a root canal necessary. The jewelry also can attract bacteria that can directly go into the drilled cavity of the tooth. It’s important to correct problems in the early stages before they become more acute. Do not wait if you suspect you may have a dental or physical problem.

As a leading dentist office in the Brandon FL area, we at Five Star Dental Care encourage our patients with oral piercings to remove their jewelry before it invariably puts their health at risk. However, if you have an oral piercing and plan to keep it, we can share professional advice and ensure that you are on track for regular dental cleanings and check-ups. Call us today to schedule your appointment!

4 Reason To Look For The ADA Seal | Oral Health in Valrico

Plant City cosmetic dental and adult braces oral health in valrico

When you go to your drugstore or supermarket looking for toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitener, or another oral care product, be sure that the product you opt for displays the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. Today, we look at 4 ways the ADA seal can help you make good choices for the sake of your oral health in Valrico.

1. Products with the seal have to be safe and effective, so you won’t waste your dollars on something that won’t work, or worse, can harm you.

2. The American Dental Association (ADA) only places their seal on a product after serious scientific testing. This usually means that manufacturers have to meet higher standards than those required by law.

3. When you purchase products with the ADA seal, it’s practically like shopping with your dentist or dental hygienist right by your side! Who wouldn’t want that extra knowledge and information?

4. The ADA seal is not the organization’s recommendation of one particular product or another, but rather is a verification of the assertions made by said product, claims on which savvy consumers can rely.

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we care about our patients and their oral health in Valrico. We strive to offer them expert care and advanced dental services to make their lives easier. We also serve patients from Brandon, Riverview, and Plant City areas. Our professional team takes pride in caring for our patients and, like the ADA, we want you to have a healthy and beautiful smile. Our practice offers comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry including the following services: Invisalignporcelain veneers, dental crowns, and teeth whitening. If you’re interested, give us a call. We look forward to meeting you.

Family Dentistry in Valrico: Do Your Kids Like Dental Visits?

family dentistry in valrico

At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we are proud of the fact that the majority of our young patients enjoy visiting our office for their checkups, cleanings, and treatments. We believe that developing a relationship with an experienced, friendly dentist is an essential responsibility for parents.

The Oral Health-Physical Health Connection

Optimal physical health for children is impossible without the oral health component. Though this fact seems obvious, tooth decay in infants is a national epidemic, and, for the most part, is preventable. Regular checkups are just as critical as child exams and immunizations. The health of your child’s teeth and gums influences their speech development, eating habits, academic success, mental health, and social relationships. At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, we love working with you and your child to establish habits that ensure a healthy smile for life.

Advanced Family Dentistry in Valrico

Today’s children are far less fearful of the dentist than their grandparents’ generation. Part of the reason is that today’s dental tools have progressed considerably and rarely cause any pain. If you are old enough to remember the whining dental drills of fifty years ago, you probably have a greater appreciation for the technological developments that make dental treatment far more pleasant than in past years.

But advanced tools are not the only reason that our youngest patients look forward to dental visits. At Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS, there is a pleasant, inviting atmosphere that puts patients of all ages at ease. If you are looking for a top dentist for your child, rest assured that our knowledgeable team will make your child feel comfortable during their dental visit.

When Should A Child Have Their First Dental Checkup?

We recommend parents to bring their toddler in for a first exam before age one, or when their first tooth erupts. During the initial visit for family dentistry in Valrico, we can review dental treatments such as sealants, fluoride treatments, brushing and flossing techniques, and orthodontics.

Bring Your Questions

We also give parents suggestions about topics such as thumb-sucking, pacifiers, and other habits that affect dental health. When your child starts participating in sports, let’s talk about custom mouth guards. Remember to call us immediately at 813-653-2273 if your child suffers a tooth injury. In addition to offering family dentistry in Valrico, we offer restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Ask us about Invisalign, porcelain veneers, and dental crowns.

Dental Health in Valrico: Do You Grind Your Teeth While You Sleep?

Dental Health in ValricoMost teeth grinding occurs while you are sleeping. If you’re not sure if you grind your teeth, then you might want to look for a few key symptoms, such as a sore jaw and dull headache in the mornings. Consistent teeth grinding effects dental health in Valrico. Anxiety and stress are not the only reasons grinding may appear. An abnormal bite or missing teeth may also result in frequent teeth grinding.

Visit the Dentist

Bruxism is a medical term used for grinding teeth. Bruxism can be identified by Dr. Jeff Bynum through an oral examination of jaw tenderness and abnormalities in the teeth. Schedule a consultation with Five Star Dental Care and discuss a possible night guard for teeth grinding.

Take Control

When tooth grinding occurs, it can cause patients to suffer from oral pain and declining dental health in Valrico. Here at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum DDS, we support oral health in many ways. Here are three things that may help:

  1. Control caffeine or alcohol intake as these may increase tooth grinding.
  2. Avoid gum and stop chewing on objects. This benefits the jaw as it keeps the jaw from clenching repeatedly.
  3. Allow the jaw to relax; sometimes just setting your tongue between your teeth will help your jaw relax.

Every individual in our community from Tampa to Valrico deserves a good night’s sleep as well as a headache-free morning. Come down to our office and consult with Dr. Bynum about dental health in Valrico or any other dental concerns you might have. Call 813-653-2273 today to schedule your appointment. Our team is enthusiastic about healthy, happy patients. A beautiful, confident smile allows confident and honest interaction with others. Does Your Teen Have Unique Dental Challenges in Riverview?

Dental Challenges in Riverview

When it comes to oral health, adolescence is a pivotal time for teens. On the upside, the last of the permanent teeth come in providing young men and women with their “adult smile.” Good habits can be forged and reinforced. Teeth can be aligned with orthodontia, providing increased confidence when it is often sorely needed.

On the downside, some adolescents take up habits that are dangerous to their teeth. Adolescents often don’t understand the importance of proper dental hygiene and how it influences lifelong oral health. Some young men and women develop teenage dental cavities that can cause recurring dental challenges in Riverview.

A Healthy Lifestyle

The importance of diet cannot be overstated. Adolescence is a time when many young men and women decrease their calcium intake – a danger to both bones and teeth. The consumption of energy drinks and sugared soda also contribute to gum and dental challenges in Riverview.

Furthermore, teenagers that use tobacco and illegal drugs have an increased risk of tooth decay and oral cancer. Oral piercings can be extremely detrimental. The health risks include tooth and gum damage, infection, allergic reactions, nerve damage, and excessive swelling that can block airways.

Teens who are undergoing orthodontic treatment often have a difficult time thoroughly cleaning their teeth. It is a challenge to fit toothbrush bristles and floss under dental hardware. Toothbrushes and flossing devices that squirt water can help adolescents with braces adequately clean their teeth and gums.

Overcoming Dental Challenges in Riverview

Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS advises Florida parents to make sure their youth receive twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings. Jeff Bynum can identify and treat oral issues in their early stages so that further damage can be prevented or minimized. To schedule a thorough teen dental examination and cleaning, call Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS at 813-653-2273. The team of knowledgeable dental professionals at Five Star Dental Care – Jeff Bynum, DDS is passionate about oral health for Valrico area patients of all ages. We offer services such as emergency dental care, cosmetic dentistry, and dental implants.
