Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment
Do you feel completely rested after a full night’s sleep? Are you ready to tackle the day, or do you feel like you’ve barely slept at all? Many patients who struggle with sleep apnea, comment that they are always tired and never feel completely rested.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
When a patient suffers with sleep apnea, the tiredness comes from numerous bouts of breathing cessation and interrupted sleep. So, even after a long night of sleep the patient often feels like they have not slept much at all. Sleep apnea patients can stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer, causing the brain to signal the body to wake up in order to breathe. Symptoms of sleep apnea include:
- Daytime drowsiness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory loss
- Mood changes
- Accidents at home, at work, or behind the wheel
Snoring
Another common symptom is snoring. Television and movies often depict snoring comically, but snoring is one of the most obvious indicators of sleep apnea.
Both snoring and sleep apnea are caused by obstruction of the airway from the tongue and lower jaw. Air has difficulty squeezing through the constricted airway which causes vibrations and the sound we associate with snoring. Sometimes, though, air is prevented from passing through all together.
Not every patient that has sleep apnea is aware that they are having difficulty. Rather than waking up completely to breathe, some patients will simply enter a lighter stage of sleep. This could cause problems of not receiving the appropriate amount of deep sleep. That is one reason that we should not ignore snoring or the other symptoms associated with sleep problems. If ignored and left untreated, sleep apnea is potentially fatal.
Sleep Apnea Treatment in Valrico, FL
Dr. Jeff Bynum at Five Star Dental Care can provide patients from Riverview, Tampa, Brandon, Valrico and the surrounding areas with an array of sleep apnea treatment options.
One traditional option for patients with sleep apnea is treatment with CPAP. But this option is not tolerated well by everyone. That’s why Dr. Bynum also offers oral appliance therapy.
This effective sleep apnea treatment option uses a custom-made oral appliance to reposition the tongue and lower jaw, to maintain a clear and open airway to allow for the proper flow of oxygen. As a result, our Tampa-area patients can breathe easily at night instead of struggling.
